As a huge movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by science fiction. It’s just such a wide-open genre, and it’s consistently been a big draw at the cinema – pretty much since movies began! Sci-fi has such an amazing history, filled with incredible films, and like most successful series, it’s spawned a lot of sequels and franchises. What’s interesting is how some of these franchises just keep getting better with each new installment, while others… well, they sadly lose their spark over time. It’s a real mixed bag, honestly.
It’s common for sci-fi franchises to struggle after the first movie. Sequels aren’t always bad, but they often lack the same magic as the original. Unfortunately, many sci-fi series shine with their first film and haven’t been able to reach that same level of success since.
5) Predator

The original Predator film came out in 1987 and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger alongside a talented action cast. Since then, several sequels have been made, continuing the story of the Yautja – highly skilled, alien hunters with advanced technology. Though each Predator movie has something to offer, none have quite matched the impact of the first one.
The original Predator is still the strongest film in the series because of its clever underlying message. The movie’s depiction of heavily armed, tough guys being eliminated one by one is a critique of the exaggerated confidence often seen in action heroes, and that’s a big part of what makes the first film so effective. Later movies haven’t quite captured that same depth of meaning, although some have been comparable in terms of overall quality.
4) Planet of the Apes (Original Franchise)

The original Planet of the Apes is widely considered a science fiction masterpiece. Beyond its famous twist ending, the film featured revolutionary special effects for its time and told a compelling story. While four sequels followed, none of them reached the same level of quality as the first movie.
While the newer Planet of the Apes films have captured some of the original’s appeal, they haven’t had the same lasting effect. The first five movies are unique and suffered from increasingly outlandish sequel ideas. The original film is still the strongest, and it’s obvious the series was at its best right from the start.
3) Resident Evil

It’s unusual for video game movies to be truly good, but sometimes they get it right. The first Resident Evil film, released in 2002, showed how the T-virus outbreak began, which led to the series’ zombie apocalypse. Starring Milla Jovovich and a large ensemble cast, the movie took place in the secret, underground Umbrella Corporation facility where the virus first appeared.
The original movie was so successful it led to five follow-ups, but the series was later restarted. Unfortunately, none of the new movies matched the intense thrills and fast-paced action of the first one, and the quality gradually went downhill. The second film was decent, but after that, the sequels didn’t come close to the original’s success, making it a franchise that was best at its beginning.
2) RoboCop

Only a handful of science fiction series have created characters as memorable as RoboCop. The original film came out in 1987 and told the heartbreaking story of how the cyborg police officer came to be. It was followed by two more films in 1990 and 1993, and the series was later reimagined with a new movie in 2014.
The RoboCop movies are a classic example of a franchise that declined in quality with each sequel. While the first film had a unique, tough appeal, the second lost much of that charm. By the third movie, RoboCop felt like a parody of his former self, and the reboot was even less successful, completely losing what made the original so impressive.
1) Starship Troopers

While there are plenty of fantastic sci-fi action films, Starship Troopers often gets overlooked despite being a truly great one. Released in 1997, the Paul Verhoeven film didn’t initially receive the recognition it deserved, but it has since gained a dedicated following and is now considered a cult classic, with many people appreciating it much more in recent years.
The original Starship Troopers is a fantastic science fiction film, but the sequels really missed the mark. They abandoned the thoughtful themes and cleverness of the first movie in favor of simple, over-the-top action, ultimately damaging the original’s impact. Because of this, Starship Troopers is a rare example of a sci-fi franchise where the first film is clearly the best, and the series never reached that level again.
