Project Hail Mary’s Early Release May Not Hinder Oscars Chances Amid Recent Trend

Everyone is talking about “Project Hail Mary” as a possible Oscar nominee next year, and early signs suggest it could be a strong contender. Though the 2026 Oscars were just announced, the new sci-fi film from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller is already being discussed as a potential award winner.

Based on Andy Weir’s novel, Project Hail Mary has been a huge success with critics, earning a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also performed very well in theaters, bringing in $80.5 million in North America and $140.9 million globally during its opening weekend. It’s already become one of the highest-grossing and most praised films of 2026.

Although the Ryan Gosling movie came out almost a year before the next Oscars, recent Academy Awards history demonstrates that a film doesn’t need to be released during awards season to be nominated.

The Oscars Are Including More Films That Release Earlier In The Year

For a long time, films hoping to win awards were typically released in the fall to keep them fresh in voters’ minds. But recently, over the past four years, the Oscars have been recognizing more movies released earlier in the year, and these films have been very successful, earning numerous nominations and awards.

The movie Sinners, which came out on April 18, 2025, received a record-breaking 16 nominations for the 2026 Academy Awards. Although it didn’t win Best Picture – that award went to One Battle After Another – Sinners still took home four Oscars, including awards for Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.

Released on March 1, 2024, Dune: Part 2 received widespread praise from critics and went on to earn five nominations at the 2025 Academy Awards. It ultimately won two Oscars: one for Best Sound and one for Best Visual Effects.

In 2024, Barbie and Oppenheimer were leading nominees at the Academy Awards. Together, the two films received a total of 21 nominations. Oppenheimer was the bigger winner, taking home seven awards including Best Picture, while Barbie won one award. Although both films were released in July 2023, right before awards season, summer blockbusters aren’t often recognized by the Oscars.

The critically acclaimed film Everything Everywhere All At Once, a recent Oscar winner, first came out in theaters on April 8, 2022. It was a major success at the 2023 Academy Awards, receiving 11 nominations and winning seven awards, including top honors for Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Picture.

While some films released earlier in the year have historically done well at the Oscars, it’s becoming increasingly common for early releases to be strong contenders. For example, Project Hail Mary is already generating Oscar buzz, potentially for Best Picture or Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), and recent ceremonies prove that releasing a film early doesn’t hurt its chances.
