The popular sci-fi series Ghost in the Shell is getting a fresh reboot after a somewhat divisive remake nearly a decade ago. Fans can get a first look with a new trailer before it launches this summer. Originally a manga created by Masamune Shirow in the late 1980s, Ghost in the Shell has remained active through various adaptations and remakes, each offering a unique interpretation of the story – with varying degrees of success.
A fresh anime series based on The Ghost in the Shell is coming this July! This will be the tenth anime version of the popular franchise. When Does The Ghost in the Shell Reboot Come Out?
Fans can expect the new anime adaptation of Ghost in the Shell to premiere in Japan around July 2026. As of now, a specific release date and details about where to stream it outside of Japan haven’t been announced. The project is a collaboration between Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G., with Moko-chan directing for Science SARU in their anime directorial debut. Toh Enjoe is writing the series, Shuhei Handa is designing the characters and leading animation, and Ryo Konishi and Yuki Kanesaka are composing the music.
As a huge fan of Ghost in the Shell, it’s been tough watching the different anime versions and remakes come out – a lot of them really missed the mark and upset fans. We’ve seen everything from CG animation that drastically altered how the characters looked to that… well, let’s just say the live-action movie didn’t quite hit the spot. But I’m really excited about this new reboot! From what I’ve seen, it looks like they’re finally aiming for a more faithful adaptation of the original manga, and that’s exactly what I’ve been hoping for.
Why This Ghost in the Shell Reboot Has a Chance
When the new Ghost in the Shell anime series was announced, creator Masamune Shirow shared his thoughts with fans. He pointed out that this was actually the tenth adaptation of his work and expressed optimism for the future of the franchise. He suggested the change in production team could mark the start of a new era, acknowledging that the original manga is now quite old and asking for understanding. Ultimately, he hopes fans will enjoy this latest visual interpretation.
Over the years, there have been many adaptations of Ghost in the Shell, but this new version still feels innovative, even for longtime fans. While it differs from previous anime releases, it appears to be a closer adaptation of the original manga’s core themes and ideas.
