Batman Isn’t Gotham’s Best Fighter, And DC Just Confirmed the Two Who Are Better

One of the biggest reasons people love Batman is his incredible skillset. He’s famous as the World’s Greatest Detective, but he’s also a brilliant strategist, engineer, and escape artist – the list goes on and on. However, his fighting ability is arguably his most impressive skill. Batman is undeniably one of the best fighters in the DC Universe. He routinely takes on large groups of enemies, and can quickly defeat even highly trained assassins. Who hasn’t been thrilled watching Batman fight through hordes of ninjas or battle a supervillain with so much at stake?

Batman is known for winning his battles, largely because he’s a highly skilled fighter. However, even with his incredible abilities, he isn’t unbeatable. According to Detective Comics #1107, two fighters in Gotham City are capable of defeating him: Batgirl, Cassandra Cain, a long-time hero, and Black Canary, a new vigilante who also runs a gym. Both women have consistently demonstrated the skill to challenge Batman, and this recent issue definitively proves it.

Batman and Black Canary in the Ring

Wildcat was a legendary fighter, widely considered the best boxer of all time. He sadly died in JSA (2024) #6, leaving his boxing gym to Black Canary. Dinah and Oliver moved to Gotham to honor Wildcat’s legacy, with Dinah taking over as the gym’s head trainer. Before opening to the public, they hosted a private event for the Batman Family and Team Arrow to celebrate Ted and begin a new chapter. To officially dedicate the ring, they asked Wildcat’s most skilled students, Bruce and Dinah, to spar.

So, Batman had a really important case going on, and naturally, he couldn’t risk getting injured. He and Black Canary decided to spar, but with a twist – they agreed not to actually hit each other. Luckily, we had Cass Cain there to judge! She’s amazing at reading people, so she could essentially ‘see’ how the fight would go if they were throwing punches. They went at it, and honestly, even though both are incredible fighters, Dinah was clearly in control. Cass officially called it for Black Canary, and Bruce actually smiled about it – a good sport, that Batman!

Two Fighters Who Can Outshine the Batman

I was really excited to see Black Canary take down Batman in their sparring match! It might not be a full-on fight, and it was just boxing, but Dinah is seriously incredible. She’s always been one of DC’s strongest heroes, but she doesn’t always get the recognition she deserves. Often, she feels like she’s supporting Green Arrow, who himself is usually in the shadow of the bigger Justice League members. And it’s the same with Cassandra Cain! She consistently crushes opponents that even Batman struggles with – he’s even said he can’t beat her – but for some reason, she’s never really allowed to shine and prove it.

Both Lady Shiva and Cass Cain have proven their incredible fighting abilities. Lady Shiva is widely considered the most dangerous fighter alive, even defeating Batman in a fair fight, but both Cass and Dinah Drake have managed to beat her. Bronze Tiger, someone Batman has never defeated, has even recognized Cass as the world’s best fighter. This particular issue of Detective Comics demonstrated these skills, rather than simply stating them. Dinah previously defeated Batman in a fair fight, and Cass’s ability to read opponents and make accurate judgments was highly valued. Batman rarely gives his trust easily, and he clearly respects the skills of both fighters.

Batman is a fantastic and intimidating fighter, but surprisingly, he isn’t the strongest hero out there – and that’s perfectly fine. In fact, it’s a strength that Bruce Wayne isn’t always Gotham’s top fighter. Batman isn’t defined by being the absolute best at one thing, but by being incredibly skilled at everything. He’s a master of many disciplines, consistently ranking among the best in the world at whatever he puts his mind to. Ultimately, Batman excels as a well-rounded expert, and that’s what truly makes him special.
