The movie Project Hail Mary had a fantastic opening weekend, exceeding expectations at the box office. While its initial success was encouraging, the real test for a big-budget film like this is how well it continues to perform in subsequent weeks. A movie costing $200 million needs to maintain strong ticket sales to become profitable, and early signs – boosted by positive word of mouth – suggested Project Hail Mary was on the right track. However, analysts were still watching closely to see if it could keep up the momentum.
The movie Project Hail Mary continues to perform well at the box office. Experts at Deadline predict it will earn around $54.5 million in the US and Canada this weekend – a small drop from its impressive debut. This is a better opening weekend result than Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, and Sinners achieved. With a North American total of $164.3 million so far, Project Hail Mary is now Amazon MGM Studios’ most successful film, surpassing the previous record held by Creed III ($156.2 million).
Project Hail Mary Continues to Dominate the Box Office

Last week, Project Hail Mary quickly took the lead, and it continued to dominate at the box office this weekend. The biggest new release, the horror-comedy They Will Kill You, received mixed reviews and is expected to earn around $5 million domestically in its first few days. While horror films usually do well, They Will Kill You couldn’t compete with the massive success of Project Hail Mary. This was likely due to Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, which opened last week against Project Hail Mary and appealed to a similar audience. Given the lack of strong competition, it was expected Project Hail Mary would remain number one, and it’s impressive to see it maintain such a strong performance.
While Project Hail Mary has been at the top of the charts, it’s likely to be overtaken by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie over the Easter weekend. The original Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge hit in 2023, earning $166.7 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide, so the sequel is expected to do very well. However, Project Hail Mary isn’t expected to disappear from the charts; it will likely remain popular, especially with viewers without young children. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will appeal to families, while Project Hail Mary offers a different option for older audiences.
While some interesting movies are coming out soon, including the dramedy The Drama with Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, nothing compares to the success of Project Hail Mary for the time being. Project Hail Mary is expected to remain popular throughout most of April, at least until new releases like Lee Cronin’s The Mummy or Michael arrive. Amazon made a smart move by releasing it in the spring, allowing it to be a standout film without competing with the big summer blockbusters. This strategy has clearly been very successful.
The success of Project Hail Mary in theaters is good news for the film industry. It’s been harder to get people to go to the cinema for original films, especially with movies becoming available to stream so quickly after release. The performance of films like Sinners and Project Hail Mary shows there’s still a strong audience for big, creative, standalone movies – films that aren’t part of existing franchises. Let’s hope other science fiction and fantasy films released later in 2026 are similarly successful.
