While Darth Vader and Kylo Ren were major villains in the Star Wars saga, the most satisfying story of a villain changing for the better actually happens in a critically acclaimed TV series. The franchise, created by George Lucas, is known for its memorable heroes and villains, and many fans find the villains – especially the complicated ones like Anakin Skywalker and his grandson – to be the most interesting characters.
Darth Vader and Kylo Ren were central figures in their Star Wars sagas. Both were incredibly strong with the Force, and their journeys to becoming the leaders of the Galactic Empire and First Order shared some similarities. Importantly, Star Wars also showed their eventual redemption. While many consider their redemption stories the best in the franchise, a Disney+ show features a lesser-known narrative that could be even more compelling.
Alexsandr Kallus’ Redemption In Star Wars Rebels Explained

Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Rebels featured a surprising transformation: Alexsandr Kallus, initially a major villain, became a spy for the Rebel Alliance. As an Imperial officer, he frequently clashed with the crew of the Ghost, especially the Lasat named Zeb Orrelios. Their conflict reached a turning point when they were stranded together on the icy moon of Bahryn and forced to cooperate to survive. This experience led Kallus to question whether he was on the wrong side of the war.
After being rescued, seeing the Ghost crew’s relief and celebration over Zeb’s safety was a turning point for Kallus. Realizing his Imperial colleagues didn’t care about him, he began working secretly for the Rebellion while still posing as an Imperial officer. This ultimately led him to become “Fulcrum,” a codename used by the Rebellion’s network of informants who provided crucial intelligence to the Freedom Fighters.
The codename ‘Fulcrum’ originated with Ahsoka Tano during the rebellion against the Empire. Beyond its connection to Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice, Cassian Andor also worked to recruit agents for Fulcrum. While Star Wars Rebels featured many memorable cameos, the reveal of Kallus as the latest Fulcrum agent was a particularly rewarding twist, building on a long, carefully crafted storyline within the Disney+ series.
Why Kallus’ Redemption Arc Is Better Than Both Kylo Ren & Darth Vader

While Kallus isn’t as well-known as major Star Wars characters – he’s only appeared in the animated series Star Wars Rebels – his journey to redemption is more compelling than those of Kylo Ren or Anakin Skywalker. This is because of how his change happened. He went from being a dedicated Imperial Security Bureau captain, fully believing in the Empire’s goal of galactic order, to becoming a spy for the early Rebellion and working to restore the Republic.
Kallus’s transformation happened gradually throughout the series, beginning with the realization that he was simply a tool of the Empire. He then started to see the truth about his position, ultimately leading him to seek change. While it was satisfying to see Kylo Ren and Darth Vader also switch sides, their redemptions occurred very late in their stories, almost as a result of their situations forcing their hands. Sadly, both died soon after finding a new path.
While the grandfather and grandson made a heroic sacrifice for the greater good, Agent Kallus endured far more as the rebel spy Fulcrum. Because his change of heart happened during the ongoing fight against the Empire, and before it was defeated, he fully joined the Rebellion and was able to begin making up for his past mistakes.
Star Wars Rebels is available to stream on Disney+.
