Comic books often feature threats of total destruction, but heroes usually manage to prevent them. However, some stories explore what happens when they don’t, depicting a world where society has fallen and the few survivors struggle to rebuild. These post-apocalyptic settings – found in comics, movies, TV, and video games – allow for rich storytelling and detailed world-building. Many comic publishers, like DC, Marvel, and Image, have created their own unique visions of a post-apocalyptic Earth, often highlighting how people behave at their best and worst when facing extreme hardship.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by those ‘end of the world’ stories. Whether it’s a nuclear war or a zombie plague, it’s wild to think about how society could fall apart. But what I really love is that even in those dark, chaotic worlds, these films often show how clever and strong people can be when everything goes wrong. It just proves that even when it seems like it’s all over, there’s always room for new stories to emerge.
10) Tank Girl

Set in a post-nuclear Australia, the comic Tank Girl depicts a world where only the most eccentric can endure. Inspired by 80s punk, this British series is known for its over-the-top violence and follows the wild exploits of Rebecca Buck, or Tank Girl, who lives and drives a giant tank. Alongside her kangaroo boyfriend, Booga, she causes chaos while searching for those responsible for the apocalypse. Tank Girl is a completely unhinged, action-packed adventure with bizarre characters and a unique art style that challenges mainstream culture.
9) Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth

Created by Jack Kirby, Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth is a hidden treasure from DC Comics. The story follows Kamandi as he struggles to survive in a post-apocalyptic world reminiscent of Planet of the Apes. Centuries after a cataclysmic event called the Great Disaster wiped out most of humanity, intelligent animals now rule the Earth. Born and raised in an underground bunker, Kamandi escapes into this strange world filled with advanced technology and populated by talking gorillas, tigers, dogs, rats, and other creatures. Along the way, he’s joined by the brilliant Dr. Canus and the honorable Prince Tuftan. With its imaginative setting and compelling characters, Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth is a thrilling, classic pulp adventure.
8) Geiger

In a dark future where nuclear war has turned most of the world into a dangerous, radioactive wasteland, Tariq Geiger is an extraordinary figure – a man who is a walking nuclear reactor. The comic series Geiger tells the story of how, while sheltering his family, Tariq was exposed to massive amounts of radiation from nuclear bombs. Now, years after the devastation, he wanders the ruined landscape with his two-headed dog, protecting those who can’t protect themselves. Known as the Glowing Man because his body emits intense radiation, Geiger can defend himself by unleashing a deadly glow. He’s a compelling character – a post-apocalyptic superhero who offers a glimmer of hope to the survivors in this irradiated world.
7) Wonder Woman: Dead Earth

As part of DC’s Black Label, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth presents a truly grim story for Wonder Woman. Diana awakens after a centuries-long sleep to find Earth transformed into a post-apocalyptic wasteland overrun by savage mutants. She fights to defend the few humans who remain, but as she learns more about this new world and its creatures, she begins to suspect she may have caused the apocalypse herself. Despite its dark and violent tone, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth ultimately offers a story of hope and the possibility of finding redemption.
6) East of West

Okay, let me tell you about East of West from Image Comics. This isn’t your typical post-apocalyptic story; it’s truly epic, almost Biblical in scale. Imagine an alternate America where the Civil War never really ended, leaving the country fractured into seven constantly fighting nations. They only stopped fighting when a massive asteroid hit in 1908, and a huge prophecy came to light. The story jumps ahead to 2060, and we follow one of the Four Horsemen – Death himself – as he rides across a desolate, Wild West-inspired landscape. He’s on a deeply personal mission for revenge and to reunite with his family, but the other Horsemen? They’re determined to fulfill the prophecy and bring about the end of the world. Honestly, I think East of West is a masterpiece. The worldbuilding is incredible, and the characters are so compelling – it’s one of the best comics I’ve ever read.
5) Y: The Last Man

DC’s Y: The Last Man presents a fascinating twist on the end of the world: a plague instantly kills every mammal with a Y chromosome. This wipes out half the population and throws humanity into chaos, with extinction looming. The story centers on the two remaining men on Earth – Yorick and his monkey, Ampersand – as they navigate this drastically changed world alongside a memorable cast of characters. Y: The Last Man is a smart and captivating story, blending personal relationships, humor, and sharp observations about politics, and truly makes the most of its unique setting.
4) Sweet Tooth

DC’s Vertigo comic Sweet Tooth is a moving story about acceptance and finding hope after a devastating pandemic. The story takes place in a future where a deadly virus has wiped out much of humanity, and around the same time, children are born who are part human, part animal. One of these children, a boy named Gus, embarks on a journey with a diverse group of companions—both human and hybrid—to find a safe haven and learn about his own beginnings. Their travels are fraught with danger, as many surviving humans are quick to kill any hybrid they encounter. Ultimately, Sweet Tooth is a powerful and touching story about growing up and the families we create along the way.
3) Judge Dredd

Judge Dredd is the most well-known series from the British comic anthology 2000 AD. It’s set in a grim, post-nuclear war future, primarily within Mega City One – one of the last major cities in America. In this sprawling, crime-filled metropolis, the Judges serve as the law, and Judge Dredd is their top officer. He has the power to arrest, judge, and even execute criminals, all in the name of protecting the city. The series is full of action, but also offers a sharp commentary on the dangers of unchecked power and excessive force in law enforcement.
2) Old Man Logan

Considered one of the greatest Wolverine stories ever told, Old Man Logan is a powerful tale of revenge, loss, and ultimately, finding hope. The story is set in a future where supervillains have conquered America, turning much of the world into a desolate landscape. To make matters worse, Wolverine was manipulated by Mysterio into tragically killing his X-Men teammates. Years later, an older Wolverine attempts to atone for his past by assisting Hawkeye on a dangerous mission to deliver a mysterious package. During their journey, he confronts formidable enemies like the Hulk and the Red Skull. Old Man Logan is a gripping and dark story that perfectly embodies the complexities of Wolverine and served as a major inspiration for the highly praised Logan movie.
1) The Walking Dead

Beyond Marvel and DC, The Walking Dead is arguably the most famous comic book series ever made, and a defining work for Image Comics and the post-apocalyptic genre. It’s a truly exceptional story from start to finish that breathed new life into zombie fiction. The series centers on a compelling group of characters struggling to survive in a world overrun by ‘Walkers’. Like the best stories about societal breakdown, it explores how desperation can turn people against each other. It offers a raw and honest look at both the good and bad sides of human nature. The Walking Dead is one of the most influential and thoughtful comics ever published.
