A new crime thriller is quickly becoming a standout hit. It’s earned perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes and is currently the second most popular show on Netflix. Set in the dark streets of Oslo, the series is based on a bestselling crime novel series. If you enjoy stories with complex detectives, chilling serial killers, and a touch of police corruption, this is definitely worth watching.

As a huge fan of the Harry Hole books, I’m really excited about this new series, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole. What’s got me especially hopeful is that Nesbø himself wrote it, meaning it feels much truer to the spirit of his novels than previous adaptations. The story kicks off with the fifth book, The Devil’s Star, and plunges you right into a terrifying case – a truly brutal killer is terrorizing Norway. But it’s not just the killer Harry’s up against; his old nemesis, Tom Waaler, is back, and he’s as crooked as ever. It’s a tense showdown between these two, with Harry fighting for justice and Waaler desperate to cover his tracks. Honestly, the stakes are incredibly high, and it’s a real struggle for Harry to not let his own demons get the better of him.

It’s the Version of Detective Hole That Fans Have Been Waiting For

The latest season of Detective Hole is receiving rave reviews, currently holding a 100% critics rating. Beyond its beautiful visuals – a hallmark of Nordic noir – the show boasts perfect casting and a generally gripping, fast-paced story, though it does wander a bit at times. Critic Pat Stacey praised it as a significant improvement over the film, highlighting how it successfully re-establishes the complex character of Harry Hole – a brilliant but troubled alcoholic and loner. While the “tortured detective” trope isn’t new, Tobias Santelmann’s portrayal of Hole’s depression, anger, and bitterness feels remarkably fresh and compelling.

Critics love the series, but viewers are a little more hesitant, giving it a 79% rating so far. Many feel the show rushes through the plot, like the creators tried to fit too much into the first season in case it wasn’t renewed by Netflix. This is understandable, and letting the story unfold more slowly would have been better. Despite this, it’s still a very engaging show and definitely deserves another season – or even more!
