Why The Mandalorian Season 4 Became A Movie (& Will We Get Another Season?)

When Disney+ launched in November 2019, all eyes were on The Mandalorian. As the first live-action Star Wars show, expectations were high, but nothing could have predicted the frenzy that followed the debut of ‘Baby Yoda’ – or Grogu, as we later learned! The show instantly became a cultural phenomenon and quickly cemented its place as Disney+’s most important series, proving that Star Wars could thrive on television. It paved the way for other shows like Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka, but for three seasons, The Mandalorian remained the streamer’s biggest draw. So, the news of a feature film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, really took everyone by surprise – even Pedro Pascal himself, apparently!

After The Mandalorian Season 3 ended in spring 2023, many fans expected Din Djarin and Grogu to return in a fourth season of the popular show. However, they’re now starring in a new Star Wars movie – the first in almost seven years. This raises the question: why a movie instead of Season 4, and will their story continue as a TV series in the future?

Why Lucasfilm Decided to Make a Mandalorian Movie

Before The Mandalorian Season 3 came out, Jon Favreau had already written Season 4. Initially, the plan was to continue the show as a traditional television series. However, during the 2023 Hollywood strikes, Lucasfilm reconsidered its future projects and decided to make a Mandalorian movie instead of a fourth season (according to The Hollywood Reporter). This change signaled that Disney’s creative direction was shifting, and subsequent decisions by Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed this new approach.

Lucasfilm, known for its work in streaming TV throughout the 2020s, seems to be focusing more on releasing movies in theaters again. While new Star Wars shows like Maul – Shadow Lord and Season 2 of Ahsoka are still planned for Disney+, films are now the main priority. Lucasfilm has a movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, set for release in May 2027, and Kathleen Kennedy, the former studio president, previously announced several other films in development. Notably, no new live-action TV series were mentioned. After the release of Ahsoka Season 2, there are currently no other Star Wars series planned.

Considering Disney told the creator of the show Andor that streaming isn’t working well, it makes sense they’re now focusing on films again. Streaming may have reached its peak, as the cost of making shows increased so much that it wasn’t a realistic long-term solution. While streaming might become viable again in the future – Lucasfilm isn’t getting rid of Disney+ entirely – movies are the main priority right now.

As a big fan, I’ve been following the news about The Mandalorian Season 4, and it sounds like the show isn’t being cancelled for story reasons at all. Apparently, the plot they had could actually work better as a single movie. It seems Disney is shifting how they do things with streaming, and they’re focusing less on making tons of new shows. That’s why they’re moving forward with The Mandalorian & Grogu as a movie instead. Honestly, it makes sense – Grogu is incredibly popular, so it’s a pretty safe bet to bring to theaters, even if their marketing hasn’t been perfect!

Will The Mandalorian Season 4 Ever Happen?

It’s great to have Star Wars back in theaters after a long wait, but many fans are now wondering what that means for the future of The Mandalorian. Last year, Jon Favreau revealed he still had all the scripts for Season 4, but it doesn’t sound like those will be used for the next installment. Instead, the new film is a completely separate project, designed as a large-scale blockbuster – something Favreau is well-versed in, having directed hits like Iron Man and The Lion King.

While a fourth season of The Mandalorian is still a possibility, it’s not guaranteed to happen. At Star Wars Celebration Japan last year, Jon Favreau avoided directly answering questions about it, stating his focus was currently on the upcoming movie. There’s been talk that the future of the show depends on the film’s success. If the movie does well, a continuation is likely, but a poor performance could mean the end of Din Djarin and Grogu’s story. Furthermore, if The Mandalorian and Grogu movie isn’t well-received, Dave Filoni’s planned New Republic film might also be in jeopardy.

It’s noteworthy that Lucasfilm doesn’t appear to be developing any new live-action TV series beyond season two of Ahsoka. This adds weight to rumors that season four of The Mandalorian has been cancelled. While the show has been successful for Disney+, a new season would demand significant time and money. Considering Disney’s current view of the streaming market, the studio might prefer to pause the series and concentrate on Star Wars films instead, as movies have the potential for huge box office returns and can then draw a large audience on Disney+.

Disney and Lucasfilm are probably holding off on planning future Star Wars projects until they see how The Mandalorian and Grogu movie does in theaters. Fortunately, this movie reportedly cost less to make than other recent Star Wars films, so it doesn’t need to earn a huge amount of money to be successful. If excitement builds as the release date approaches – and the latest trailer was a good start – the movie should perform well. That way, Din Djarin and Grogu can continue their adventures as movie stars, rather than returning to Disney+.
