Doctor Who icon Christopher Eccleston reveals what could finally get him to return to the show

Christopher Eccleston has said he’d consider coming back to Doctor Who, but only if the circumstances were right.

The actor brought the Ninth Doctor to life when the show returned in 2005, and he starred alongside Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper, in a series of exciting adventures.

During a panel at C2E2 2026 on Saturday, March 28th, Christopher Eccleston was asked if he might return to the world of Doctor Who, now that David Tennant had recently reprised his role.

He explained that Doctor Who has historically been created by men. No woman has ever been the head writer, or ‘showrunner,’ of the series.

He explained his ideal scenario: a young girl, maybe six to eight years old in 2005 when his show first aired, would grow up and hire him to work on her project. He said he’d accept immediately, without hesitation.

Eccleston has repeatedly ruled out a return to the show.

In a 2018 interview with TopMob, Eccleston explained that he became disillusioned with the show while it was being filmed.

He stated that his working relationship with his three direct supervisors – the showrunner, producer, and co-producer – completely fell apart during the initial phase of filming and never improved.

The actor chose not to participate in the show’s 50th anniversary episode in 2013, while Steven Moffat was the executive producer.

At Rose City Comic Con in 2019, the actor explained why he turned down an appearance in ‘The Day of the Doctor.’ He felt the role they offered him didn’t properly represent his version of the Ninth Doctor, so he declined the offer.

In 2021, Christopher Eccleston returned to his role as the Ninth Doctor in a series of audio dramas created by Big Finish. This sparked speculation among fans about whether he might appear in a special celebrating the show’s 60th anniversary.

During a Dragon Con question-and-answer session, Christopher Eccleston clarified that he wouldn’t revisit his role as the Doctor, stating his working relationship with the BBC regarding Doctor Who remains unresolved.
