Star Trek Fans Slam Paramount For Rejecting the Perfect Star Trek Show Pitch

Most Star Trek fans know the future of the franchise is uncertain right now. While Paramount has promised to focus on Star Trek, and a new movie is planned, there aren’t any shows currently being filmed beyond the final seasons of those already canceled. With the recent cancellation of Starfleet Academy, it feels like the period overseen by Alex Kurtzman is coming to an end. It’s possible this era will be remembered more for the discussions about the shows than the shows themselves. Adding to the situation, news about a previously abandoned project has just surfaced, sparking even more conversation.

As a huge fan of Andy Weir – I absolutely loved Project Hail Mary, and I think it’s going to be remembered as one of the best sci-fi books of the last ten years – I was really bummed to hear some news he shared recently. He was talking about the movie release on a podcast and mentioned he actually tried to create a Star Trek show. Sadly, Kurtzman and Paramount passed on his pitch, which is honestly pretty frustrating to hear!

I proposed a Star Trek series to Paramount and had extensive Zoom meetings with the showrunners and Alex Kurtzman, a key executive producer. While I personally don’t enjoy much of the newer Trek content – and Alex Kurtzman is a genuinely nice person – I felt the shows themselves weren’t very good. They ultimately rejected my pitch, so I wasn’t pleased with the outcome.

Many Star Trek fans are understandably upset by the recent news. On Reddit, one fan joked that Paramount seems determined to exclude those who genuinely love Star Trek from creating new content. Another fan suggested the studio should be grateful that Andy Weir is interested in contributing to the franchise at all. Overall, the reaction from fans is largely negative.

Andy Weir’s Lost Star Trek Show Inspires Debate

It appears Weir is still upset about something, as his recent statements suggest, and many fans agree. This is especially noteworthy considering he’s actually praised some Star Trek shows produced during Kurtzman’s time, despite also calling other shows “terrible.”

Just my two cents as a viewer: I really enjoy Strange New Worlds and think it’s well done. I didn’t dislike Enterprise, though it was a bit odd. Lower Decks was a lot of fun to watch. As for the rest of the Star Trek series, I’m not a fan.

It seems like Discovery and Prodigy are the main focus right now. Weird is a big fan and has a talent for making science understandable, which could really revitalize Star Trek. He’s good at subtly promoting positive human values through his science fiction, something Star Trek has always done with its characters, even those who aren’t human. However, not everyone agrees. One person on Reddit stated they won’t watch unless he lets another writer handle female characters, and another wonders if his writing style will actually fit the Star Trek universe.

These comments highlight a broader conversation, with many people comparing the new series to the successes of shows like The Martian and Project Hail Mary. While it’s important to listen to these opinions, I’m concerned that Star Trek didn’t even get the chance to create a pilot episode. Hopefully, the new leadership at Paramount will reconsider the project.
