The 2010s saw a huge wave of movies based on young adult novels. Following the success of the Harry Potter films and the popularity of Twilight at the end of the 2000s, studios began adapting many YA books for the big screen. The Hunger Games was a massive hit, particularly the first two movies, and The Maze Runner trilogy boosted the careers of stars like Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, and Will Poulter. While Divergent started strong, it quickly lost momentum. Many other adaptations didn’t fare as well, including The Host, Mortal Engines (which gained a cult following), The 5th Wave, The Darkest Minds, Vampire Academy, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and Beautiful Creatures.
Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, adapted from Ernest Cline’s popular novel, doesn’t quite fit neatly into the same category as those other movies. While most of them are fantasy, Ready Player One is science fiction. Plus, although the book is often considered young adult fiction, its nostalgic themes and references actually resonate more with adults. The movie, which came out eight years ago, has a similar appeal.
How Did Ready Player One Do & How Does Its Quality Compare to the Rest of the YA Boom?

Compared to other young adult book adaptations, Ready Player One isn’t quite as strong as the Harry Potter films or the first two Hunger Games movies, but it’s better than most. The movie is exciting and creates a detailed world, though it doesn’t develop its supporting characters very well. Also, T.J. Miller’s performance as i-R0k can be a little annoying.
It’s enjoyable to see Spielberg revisiting a world filled with famous characters from 1980s films and TV shows. He was even involved in creating some of these, including Back to the Future (which gets several nods throughout the film), Gremlins, and the Transformers movies.
The final battle is packed with references to popular culture. You’ll spot characters like Ryu and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and even an orc from World of Warcraft. Other cameos include classic monsters like the Wolf-Man, and iconic heroes and villains such as RoboCop, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, He-Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, SPARTAN-IIs from Halo, Flash, Deadshot, Joker, Harley Quinn, Chucky, and the Iron Giant. The film also features a memorable scene set at the Overlook Hotel from The Shining.
Keep an eye out for some future stars popping up in smaller roles here! I spotted Lulu Wilson, who was really making a name for herself around the time with films like Annabelle: Creation and her fantastic lead performance in Becky. And it’s fun to see Mckenna Grace (fresh off landing a role in Scream 7), Letitia Wright – who had just become known as Shuri in Black Panther – and even Ralph Ineson, who we’d later know as Galactus. Plus, Hanna John-Kamen shows up – she’d soon be wreaking havoc as Ghost in Ant-Man and the Wasp. It’s a cool little pre-fame glimpse at some seriously talented actors.
As a fan, I think Ready Player One really felt like a huge, epic movie – and honestly, it was! The production cost between $155 and $175 million, making it one of the most expensive YA adaptations ever. It was pricier than most Hunger Games films, only beaten by the final Mockingjay movie, and similar in cost to the later Harry Potter films. Most other YA movies usually stayed within a $50 to $60 million budget, so Ready Player One definitely went all out.
The movie was a successful investment, earning nearly $608 million – enough to justify making another one. A sequel is currently being developed, but its success isn’t guaranteed. The second book, Ready Player Two, released years after the original and the film, received largely negative reviews and didn’t live up to the first book’s popularity. Most fans hope a movie adaptation will significantly differ from the book’s plot. The big question is whether the poor reception of the second book will hurt the potential success of a film sequel.
