BBC confirms new factual drama focused on the murder of Sarah Everard by Wayne Couzens

The BBC is creating a new drama based on the true story of Sarah Everard, who was tragically killed in London in 2021 by a police officer. The drama will focus on the events surrounding her death.

The BBC is creating a two-part drama that will explore how a person with a history of sexual offenses was able to join and continue working as a police officer in the Metropolitan Police force. The drama currently doesn’t have a title.

The review will also examine how these mistakes have affected people’s trust in the police, especially considering the recent increase in violence against women and girls.

Wayne Couzens was found guilty of abducting, raping and murdering Everard in 2021.

Award-winning writer Jeff Pope, known for adapting true stories into compelling TV dramas like Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and A Confession, is writing this series.

He was also an executive producer on two notable true crime documentaries: The Reckoning for the BBC, which investigated the offenses of Jimmy Savile, and See No Evil: The Moors Murders for ITV, which detailed the crimes of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

In a statement, the Pope expressed that Wayne Couzens should not have been allowed to serve as a police officer, highlighting that chances to prevent this were overlooked. He emphasized that Couzens being on duty on the night of March 3rd, 2021, despite a history of sexual offenses, was a foreseeable disaster and the central issue raised by these events.

Lindsay Salt, head of BBC Drama, stated that Pope will handle the story sensitively, making sure Sarah Everard’s case and the issues surrounding it aren’t forgotten, and will continue to scrutinize the police’s actions.

She explained that drama is uniquely suited to address difficult real-world issues with sensitivity and respect. This series will specifically examine the devastating effects of the crime, the sexism and internal problems within the Metropolitan Police, and what we can learn from it all.
