Sony and TCL have finalized their strategic partnership. They signed the official agreement following a preliminary understanding reached in January. This update was posted on March 31st, 2026, at 1:45 PM.
Sony and TCL are partnering to create a new company called Bravia Inc. TCL will be the majority owner with a 51% stake, while Sony will own the remaining 49%.
The press release reveals:
The New Company will take over Sony’s home entertainment division, handling everything from creating and designing products to manufacturing, selling, shipping, and providing customer support. This includes consumer TVs (Bravia), business-focused flat panel and LED displays, projectors, and home audio systems like home theater setups and individual audio components. The New Company will run this entire operation worldwide.
The company plans to develop new and creative products that satisfy customers around the globe, and to expand its business by working efficiently and effectively.
Sony is famous for its electronics, but it’s also been a major entertainment company for quite some time.
PlayStation, working with Sony Pictures and Sony Music, is actively changing its approach and has been openly discussing its goal to become a leader in new entertainment areas, such as anime.
It’s not unexpected that the company is planning to separate its television division and combine it with TCL, a major Chinese electronics manufacturer, in a new partnership.
As part of the agreement, TCL will be the majority owner of the new company with a 51% share, while Sony will own the remaining 49%. This means Sony will no longer be the dominant owner.
Even so, TCL plans to keep using the ‘Sony’ and ‘Bravia’ names on its products, and will continue to benefit from Sony’s excellent picture and sound technology.
TCL will also be bringing its own display technology to the table.
If all goes well, this partnership should produce top-quality Bravia screens that are more affordable than those from other companies. But ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see if it delivers on its promise.
The companies anticipate finalizing their agreement in March. If all goes according to plan and they receive the necessary approvals, the new venture is expected to launch in April 2027.
If the agreement is approved, it will likely signal the end of Sony’s long history in the television industry, a sector they’ve been involved in since launching the TV8-301 model in the 1960s.
