A video game originally developed for the Sega Dreamcast almost 25 years ago has finally been released online. It’s not uncommon for games to be nearly finished but never officially launched on their intended console, and most are eventually forgotten. However, this particular game, which was planned for release in 2001, is a rare exception and is now available to play.
Sega Online recently released Propeller Arena: Aviation Battle Championship online after almost 25 years. Originally planned for September 19, 2001, the multiplayer dogfighting game was canceled following the 9/11 attacks. The decision was made due to the game’s setting and cover art, which depicted aerial combat over cities. With players battling in the skies above skyscrapers using machine guns and other weapons, Sega felt releasing such a game so soon after the attacks would have been inappropriate.
Propeller Arena Has Finally Been Released

The story behind Propeller Arena is unfortunately one of unfortunate timing. The game was fully developed by Sega AM2 and ready for release when the 9/11 attacks happened. Because the attacks in New York and Washington D.C. resembled elements of the game’s box art and themes, releasing it felt inappropriate. On top of that, Dreamcast sales were already falling, meaning the game likely wouldn’t have been profitable even with all the development costs already invested. Despite these issues, rumors circulated that some changes were made in an attempt to release it anyway.
Despite initial development, Propeller Arena was never officially released. Most people first learned about the game in 2013 when an image of it was leaked online. While it is playable using an emulator if you can find a copy, the online multiplayer features aren’t available. The game is set in 2045 and features an air combat tournament where pilots fly World War II-era fighter planes, battling each other to become the ultimate champion.
Okay, so it’s March 2026 and Propeller Arena is finally out! Honestly, it’s not perfect yet – there are still bugs and things that need fixing. A lot of us are running into network problems, and right now it’s kinda just playable. We’ve been managing six-player deathmatches through the Sega Online Discord, which is fun. But everyone’s really hopeful that with a little more time and help from the community, Propeller Arena will become the awesome game we all know it can be. There’s a lot of hype to get up in the air and really experience it!
