As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited about where things are headed with Superman! David Corenswet’s performance was a big part of why James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe got off to such a promising start. The first movie did great with both critics and audiences, which means we’re getting a sequel, Man of Tomorrow, in 2027. We knew he’d make a cameo in this year’s Supergirl, and now we’re starting to get a glimpse of what that might look like, which is awesome!
The trailer for the new Supergirl series starts with Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) getting a video message from her cousin, Superman. He tells her he misses her and wants to hear from her, hinting that some time has passed since Superman’s story (but the series still takes place before Man of Tomorrow). The message also makes it clear that Clark Kent won’t have a major role in the show.
The DCU Is Getting Its Shared Universe Right With Superman
It’s hard to believe the trailer showed everything Superman will do in the movie, so there’s probably a bit more to his role, but not a huge amount. It seems likely he’ll appear at the beginning and end of the story – maybe by initially contacting Kara and then either trying again or receiving a call back from her, likely for comedic effect.
Having David Corenswet’s Superman involved is a natural fit, and will likely boost promotion. Just like Supergirl’s cameo in Superman, this feels like a genuine way to connect the characters. It makes the DC Universe feel more real, suggesting their stories continue even when we’re not watching. As cousins, it makes sense for them to interact, and this approach aligns with how both characters have been portrayed so far in the DCU.
The film also carefully balances Superman’s presence, making sure he doesn’t steal the show from Supergirl. If he had a major role, he’d likely overshadow her story in her own movie. By keeping his appearance brief, the film gets the benefit of a fun cameo without diverting attention from Supergirl. This approach also neatly avoids questions about why Superman isn’t more involved as the story unfolds.
This is a strong foundation for the DC Universe, and it seems likely to continue shaping future projects. We’ve already seen hints of this interconnectedness, like Lex Luthor’s appearance in Peacemaker, and Guy Gardner is set to appear in Lanterns later this year. It’s logical for these characters to interact and influence each other’s stories, but it’s important to avoid crossovers and cameos that distract from the main narrative.
This strategy also ensures audiences don’t forget about David Corenswet as Superman, building anticipation for his return in 2027. It seems to be finding the right balance – something the previous DC Universe struggled with regarding Henry Cavill’s Superman, due to a hurried attempt to create a shared universe and inconsistent use of the character. This approach feels like a more solid way to develop both the character and the universe, and the upcoming Supergirl movie will likely demonstrate that.
The movie Supergirl is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 26, 2027, and Man of Tomorrow will follow on July 9, 2027.
