Supergirl Trailer: DCU Fans Can Stop Worrying as James Gunn Explains Viral Post

DC Universe fans can relax – James Gunn’s latest Instagram post isn’t related to the upcoming Supergirl trailer.

I’m so excited for the new Supergirl movie! It’s coming to theaters and IMAX this summer, and Craig Gillespie is directing. I loved seeing Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El in the last few seconds of James Gunn’s Superman movie, and I’m thrilled she’s coming back to play the lead! James Gunn is also producing, which makes me even more confident this movie will be amazing.

What did James Gunn’s post mean?

DC Studios announced yesterday that a trailer for the new Supergirl movie is coming soon. Interestingly, James Gunn also posted a thumbs-down emoji on his Instagram the same day. While some fans wondered if this meant he didn’t like the trailer, the meaning behind the post was initially unclear.

James Gunn recently clarified that a recent social media post wasn’t related to Supergirl. He explained on Threads that it was actually a nod to his new movie, ‘Project Hail Mary,’ which is currently in cinemas.

In the movie Project Hail Mary, astronaut Ryland Grace encounters an alien he calls Rocky. Because they come from different worlds, they have trouble understanding each other, especially when it comes to gestures. For example, Grace tries to show Rocky a thumbs-up, but Rocky interprets it as a thumbs-down. This mix-up becomes a funny, ongoing gag, with the characters jokingly giving each other a thumbs-down whenever something positive happens.

This post isn’t about the Supergirl movie at all, so fans can rest assured that James Gunn wasn’t commenting on its quality. You can now watch the new Supergirl trailer by clicking here.

Supergirl will be released on June 26, 2026.
