Netflix has reported that Season 2 of One Piece has fewer viewers than its first season. The sequel, which arrived on March 10, 2026, was highly anticipated, especially because the first season successfully broke the trend of poor live-action anime adaptations. Despite a strong marketing push and new cast members, viewership declined. However, the new season is arguably more ambitious and represents an improvement in almost every way.
I’ve been watching the reaction to the new season of One Piece, and it’s been really interesting. Fans clearly love it – the seventh episode is the highest-rated one this season on IMDb, and six of the ten best episodes ever are from these recent episodes. It even hit number one globally on Netflix for two weeks, which seemed like a huge win. But, according to data Netflix shared with What’s On Netflix, the overall viewership numbers tell a slightly different story. It looks like this season is actually seeing about 34% fewer viewers compared to the first season.
One Piece Season 2 Falls Around 34% Behind Season 1
After 13 days, Netflix data shows this season is currently 14 million views behind where they expected. The data also indicates that many of the viewers who watched the first episode didn’t continue watching the rest of the season, which explains the viewership gap. While a drop in views was anticipated – the first season was a highly anticipated premiere, while the second season relies more on existing fans – a 34% decrease is worrying and could affect whether Netflix decides to make more seasons.
The next season is coming soon, but if more people don’t start watching, the show could face a significant drop in viewers after that. This raises questions about whether it will be renewed and could even lead to cancellation or big changes. Luckily, fans really enjoyed Season 2, and with Season 1 gaining popularity again thanks to the new release, overall viewership still has a chance to increase. How well Season 3 of Netflix’s One Piece performs will ultimately determine the show’s future, but at the moment, things don’t seem critical.
