2026 will be a major year for the Punisher, with Jon Bernthal reprising his role as the intense vigilante. He’ll appear in both a standalone special called One Last Kill and the Spider-Man: Brand New Day series. Fans won’t have to wait long for One Last Kill, which is scheduled to be released on May 12th. While details about the Punisher’s story are still limited, the trailer for Brand New Day shows he’ll have a complicated, almost friendly rivalry with Spider-Man.
Jon Bernthal’s other work commitments kept him from appearing in the second season of Born Again. However, given the intense rivalry between his character, the Punisher, and Wilson Fisk (the Kingpin), fans wondered why Frank Castle wouldn’t be involved in Daredevil’s fight against him, especially with Fisk now running for mayor and likely becoming the Punisher’s primary target. This sparked a lot of discussion about the Punisher’s role in the season. Now, the show itself has unexpectedly provided an answer.
Even Matt Murdock & Karen Page Don’t Know Where the Punisher Is

Daredevil and the Punisher make an odd pair due to their contrasting beliefs. Daredevil, Matt Murdock, still tries to uphold justice, while the Punisher, Frank Castle, focuses on eliminating criminals with brutal effectiveness. Karen Page finds herself caught in the middle, caring for both men and understanding their viewpoints – she even has a history of taking matters into her own hands. This conflict is explored in episodes 2 and 3 of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, where Karen questions if there’s any alternative to stopping Wilson Fisk.
This prompts a conversation between Matt and Karen about Frank Castle’s sudden disappearance. It’s unknown if they realize the Punisher was captured and briefly held by Fisk, only to escape again at the end of the first season of Born Again. Regardless, they’re clearly puzzled by the Punisher’s lack of activity against the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. What’s even more unsettling is that Fisk’s task force is actually using the Punisher’s logo on their uniforms – something Castle would definitely see as a major offense.
Where is the Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again?

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really intrigued by what they’re doing with the Punisher. His disappearance feels deliberate, and I think they’re setting something big up. Either he’s chasing after an even more personal target than Kingpin, or the events of Born Again really messed him up. Seeing those corrupt cops and AVTF guys practically worship him… that’s gotta be tough for a guy like Frank Castle, someone who’s built his life on a very specific code. It makes you wonder if he’s questioning everything and trying to find a new path for his war on crime. I’m definitely excited to see where they take him!
I’ve been thinking about the Punisher lately, and it’s struck me how much he resembles a serial killer. The FBI defines a serial killer as someone who commits multiple murders over time, with breaks in between, and honestly, that fits the Punisher perfectly. His targets just happen to be criminals. The Netflix series even hinted at this, showing him needing time to cool down after taking someone out. Maybe that’s where he is right now – just in another one of those periods.
It’s pretty clear that the mystery surrounding the Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again was intentionally created to lead into the stories told in Punisher: One Last Kill and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The timing of the upcoming “Special Presentation” – released right after Brand New Day ends – isn’t a coincidence. Marvel cleverly used the real-life challenges of filming to explain the Punisher’s disappearance within the show’s plot. This was a good move, and it should result in a clear and easy-to-follow storyline.
We can expect a connected storyline to unfold across Marvel’s releases this spring and summer, similar to how things used to work in the MCU. The upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series will lead directly into Punisher: One Last Kill, which will then set up the Punisher’s role in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. This is a great example of Marvel utilizing its ability to tell stories across different platforms – TV shows, special presentations, and movies – with the Punisher seamlessly moving between them. Hopefully, we’ll finally get some answers regarding the Punisher’s story in the MCU.
