Lord of the Rings open-world game may have found the perfect developer, depending on who you believe

For years, fans have hoped for a massive, open-world game set in Middle-earth, similar to the Elder Scrolls series. While it’s never happened, recent rumors suggest that one or more such games might actually be in the works. However, it’s unclear exactly who is developing them.

The rumor of a new Lord of the Rings game started when translator and journalist Ryszard Chojnowski, known as ‘RYSŁAW,’ mentioned on the Tolkein Polska Podcast that he’d heard Warhorse Studios (the creators of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2) was secretly working on it. This followed a previous report by Insider Gaming about a Lord of the Rings game in development, as Wccftech noted.

According to Insider Gaming, the Lord of the Rings game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind games like Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. They’re being funded by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), in addition to support from Embracer and Revenge.

Insider Gaming reports that Warhorse Studios isn’t developing this particular game, though they may be working on a different one.

So, are we getting two Lord of the Rings games, or not?

Warhorse Studios seems well-suited to creating a Lord of the Rings game. Their game, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, already has many elements that would translate well – imagine swapping the Cumans for Orcs and adding Hobbits and Elves! It’s a surprisingly good starting point for an excellent Lord of the Rings experience.

Warhorse Studios, the team behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, seems to be developing a new game using Unreal Engine. This is based on recent job postings the studio has published, as noticed by users on the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit.

The first two Kingdom Come: Deliverance games were built with Crytek’s CryEngine, and job postings suggest the developers plan to continue using it for a potential third game. This means any project using Unreal Engine would likely be a brand new game, separate from the Kingdom Come series.

It’s a bit of a guess, but Chojnowski might have gotten confused. He could have mistakenly thought rumors about Warhorse were connected to the game funded by ADIO, when in reality, he overheard something completely unrelated.

We can’t confirm anything for sure right now, but the fact that Warhorse Studios seems to be juggling several projects hints that something new is happening.

We contacted Warhorse Studios and Cystral Dynamics for a statement and will share any new details we receive about this story. TopMob Gaming will keep you updated.
