I have to say, Prime Video’s new historical drama is really surprising me. It’s quietly climbing the charts and becoming a genuine hit globally – and the timing couldn’t be better, because they just announced a spin-off! It’s a testament to the quality of the show that it’s gaining momentum like this.
According to data from FlixPatrol, the TV show House of David is currently fourth in popularity on Prime Video globally as of April 1st. It’s appearing in the top 10 lists of over fifty countries, and is the most popular show in six of them: Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Germany, New Zealand, Romania, and South Africa. In the United States, it’s been consistently ranked fifth for most of the last week. The series, which premiered in 2025, tells the story of David’s rise to power.
House of David Chronicles the Biblical Figure’s Rise in Society
House of David, a production from Wonder Project and Amazon MGM Studios, tells the story of a young shepherd named David (played by Michael Iskander) from Bethlehem. Chosen to become the next king of Israel after Saul (Ali Suliman) suffers a mental breakdown, David must rise to the challenge and fulfill his destiny.
This series begins around 1000 BC, following a young shepherd as he matures and overcomes obstacles that strengthen his belief. His journey culminates in a legendary battle against the Philistine giant Goliath. The second season, which started in October 2025, continues the story immediately after Goliath’s defeat, showcasing even more intense conflicts.
Although House of David is based on a Biblical story, its creators aimed to appeal to a broad audience, and it seems they succeeded. The first season has been well-received, earning a ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 67% approval score from critics and a remarkable 90% audience score.
I’m so thrilled with how well House of David is doing on Prime Video! It really grabbed people’s attention – over 22 million of us in the U.S. tuned in within the first few weeks. That success led Amazon to immediately greenlight a second season, and now it’s reached over 44 million viewers globally! It’s amazing to see so many people enjoying the show.
An Exciting New House of David Spinoff is On the Way
Good news for fans of House of David! Wonder Project has announced a new three-part special called The Old Stories: Moses, which takes place in the same world. Ben Kingsley will play Moses, and O-T Fagbenle, known from The Handmaid’s Tale, will play Pharaoh. The special is scheduled to be released this spring and will be available to stream worldwide on Prime Video soon after.
Filmmaker Jon Erwin, known for his work on House of David, explains that the story of Moses remains powerful and relevant. His new film, The Old Stories: Moses, aims to retell this classic tale with both grand spectacle and intimate emotion. Erwin highlights the strong performances from the cast and is excited for audiences to experience the film on Wonder Project.
