Sony Interactive Entertainment is buying Cinemersive Labs, a UK company that focuses on machine learning and computer vision technology.
This isn’t the launch of a new game studio. Instead, a team is joining our Research and Development department, the Visual Computing Group, which focuses on areas like neural networks and machine learning.
Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company that makes PlayStation, is always working on new technologies to improve graphics and create more engaging games, according to a recent statement.
We’re excited to share that SIE has agreed to buy Cinemersive Labs, a UK company specializing in machine learning and computer vision.
Cinemersive Labs, established in 2022, creates technology that transforms regular photos into realistic, immersive 3D experiences, according to their website.
After the acquisition, the Cinemersive Labs team will become part of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Visual Computing Group. They’ll help us improve the graphics in our games by using machine learning to make visuals better, enhance how images are created, and deliver a more realistic and detailed experience for players.
Based on the quote, the company will join an internal team dedicated to creating innovative visuals with the newest technology.
We don’t claim to be experts on the details, but PSSR could be a great example of this team’s technology becoming available to the public. PSSR is a technology that uses artificial intelligence to enhance images, making them clearer and more detailed.
Okay, so this acquisition is pretty under the radar, but as a PlayStation gamer, I’m guessing we’ll see some of what Cinemersive Labs was working on show up in the tech for the PS6 eventually. It might not be a huge announcement now, but I’m excited to see how it impacts future games!
