Henry Cavill Volunteers Himself for Villain Role in a ‘James Bond’ Reboot

Henry Cavill looks fantastic in a suit, and that’s just one reason people often suggest him as the next James Bond. He actually auditioned for the role before Daniel Craig got it in Casino Royale, but ended up becoming Superman – a hugely popular superhero. Even after playing another iconic character, Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher, people still believe Cavill could be a perfect Bond.

For years, Henry Cavill was a leading contender to become the next James Bond, even before Daniel Craig’s last film, No Time to Die, came out in 2021. As time went on, expectations grew that a new Bond would be chosen soon. However, with each passing year, Cavill has aged – he’s now 42 – and reports suggest producers are looking for a younger actor who can play the role for many films to come. While Cavill has said he’d be interested in being part of a Bond movie, he now thinks he’d be better suited to play a villain instead of 007.

Speaking with Heat Magazine, per Twitter user @nature_dweller, Cavill confessed:

It wasn’t that I refused the role; the timing just wasn’t right for me. Any actor would dream of playing James Bond, but at my age – 42 – I’m likely past the point where I’d be considered for the part. I’d actually be more interested in playing a Bond villain. A well-developed villain character would be a really fascinating role to take on.

Denis Villeneuve, the director of films like Arrival and Dune, will direct the next installment, working from a screenplay by Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders. However, very little else is known about the project at this time.

Although Henry Cavill didn’t get the James Bond role, he’s had a successful career starring in major superhero films like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League. He’s shared his thoughts on how playing such a powerful character has impacted his interactions with fans.

It’s really rewarding when children recognize me – they don’t think of me as the actor playing Superman, but as Superman himself. Taking on such a well-known character comes with a lot of responsibility, not only to do the role justice in the movie, but also to connect with and appreciate the passionate fans.

Given that James Bond is a sophisticated secret agent authorized to kill, Daniel Craig may not want to play the role again anytime soon. However, as demonstrated by his grittier performances in films like Mission: Impossible – Fallout and The League of Ungentlemanly Warfare, he clearly enjoys taking on more intense and physically demanding roles.
