New Supergirl Video Shows Off Fresh Footage From DCU Film (And Confirms a Big Difference From Superman)

The new Supergirl movie, the next installment in the DC Universe, will be in theaters soon, and Warner Bros. and DC Studios are starting to heavily promote it. A recent trailer gave fans a better look at the story and showed the touching relationship between Kara Zor-El and Krypto, which will be a central emotional element of the film. Marketing for Supergirl has consistently emphasized that this version of the character is distinct from her more traditionally heroic cousin, and a new behind-the-scenes video continues to highlight that difference.

DC Studios and Warner Bros. recently shared a look behind the scenes of the new trailer, featuring footage from the movie’s production and interviews with director Craig Gillespie, star Milly Alcock, and James Gunn. Gunn explained Supergirl’s difficult upbringing: “Supergirl grew up on the remains of a destroyed planet, surrounded by death. She’s very different from Superman and Clark Kent.”

Alcock described how the show Supergirl will tell its own unique story, separate from the Superman movie released last summer. She explained that Supergirl is driven by past pain and hardship, and that viewers shouldn’t expect a simple sidekick role to Superman. Instead, she promised a powerful and compelling Supergirl story. You can watch a video about it here.

Supergirl Is An Important Release for the DCU

Look, the new DC Universe really began to take shape with Creature Commandos late last year, but it was Superman that truly announced its arrival. The film wasn’t just well-received by critics – it was a huge financial success, earning over $618 million globally and becoming the biggest comic book movie of 2025. That gave the shared universe a fantastic launch. Now, with James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow on the horizon, all eyes are on Supergirl. It needs to build on Superman‘s success and prove itself as both a critical and commercial win to keep this momentum going.

It remains to be seen how well Supergirl will perform in theaters, especially since it’s opening during a busy month with several other releases like Masters of the Universe, Disclosure Day, and Toy Story 5. However, DC Studios is working hard to set the film up for success. So far, the marketing has been strong, consistently emphasizing what makes Supergirl different from Superman and highlighting its unique style. While some have compared it to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, everything we’ve seen suggests Supergirl won’t simply be a copy of Superman.

This approach reflects a core goal for James Gunn as he builds the DC Universe. Just like the comic books, he wants each movie and TV show to have its own distinct style, keeping the franchise exciting and new. He sees every project as a chance to showcase the wide range of stories possible within this universe, and to prevent audiences from getting tired of superhero content. Supergirl is launching at an interesting moment for comic book adaptations; while the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced some recent setbacks, there’s still a big audience for these films – particularly when they’re well-made.

A strong case can be made for Supergirl being the ideal second film in the DC Universe. Because of its connection to Superman – with Kal-El planned to appear – it offers familiar characters and imagery that will resonate with audiences and feel like a natural part of the larger story. However, by deeply exploring Supergirl’s complex emotional state and introducing exciting intergalactic elements, the movie will stand on its own and avoid feeling like a simple Superman rehash or a weak spin-off. Supergirl has the potential to be a truly entertaining blockbuster and finally give this iconic DC character the fantastic film she’s long deserved.
