For more than two decades, Laika has been a leading studio in stop-motion animation, creating some of the most beloved films of recent years. They’re known for critically acclaimed movies like Coraline, The Boxtrolls, ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link. This year, Laika is returning with a new film, Wildwood, which promises a unique story. To mark a special occasion, Laika is also releasing a crossover event, combining two of their most popular stories into one.
Laika Studios, the animation company behind Coraline and The Boxtrolls, created a fun image featuring characters from both films to celebrate the opening of Portland’s new waterfront park. The picture shows Coraline and Winnie running through the park, and while it’s just a still image and not an animated scene, it’s a delightful and unexpected crossover. Laika described it as a spring photoshoot, capturing the characters enjoying the cherry blossoms and sunshine at the park. You can see the image below!
Laika & Wildwood

It’s not surprising that Laika is creating a special event to honor Portland, Oregon, given the setting of their upcoming film, Wildwood. The movie, based on a novel by Colin Meloy, is set to release in October, and early looks suggest it could be Laika’s most intense and shadowy project yet. Here’s how the stop-motion animation studio describes the film.
Just outside Portland is a secret, magical place called Wildwood – a place people aren’t meant to know about, let alone enter. But Prue McKeel is about to find herself there. When her baby brother, Mac, is carried into the deep forest by a group of crows, Prue and her awkward classmate, Curtis, set off on a rescue mission. Prue may believe she’s outgrown fairytales, but she’s quickly discovering she’s right in the middle of one, complete with talking animals, sly bandits, and dangerous, powerful enemies.
Travis Knight, who leads Laika Studios, is directing a new film set to release in 2026, making for a busy year for him. Before that, his live-action Masters of the Universe movie will be in theaters this summer. While this project isn’t stop-motion animation like some of Laika’s previous work, it’s generating a lot of excitement. Wildwood will be Laika’s first feature film in over seven years, following Missing Link. Though it’s been a long time in the making, Laika consistently delivers films that are worth the wait.
I just saw the news about this Laika crossover popping up online, and I’m curious to hear what everyone thinks! Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, and let’s discuss it all over on the ComicBook Forum.
