Back to the Future 4 Gets Honest Answer From Co-Creator

The franchise has grown to include many different types of media, but there are only three official movies. For the last 36 years, fans have often asked for a fourth film, but it’s unlikely to happen.

Bob Gale, the co-creator of Back to the Future along with director Robert Zemeckis, has definitively stated that Back to the Future 4 will not happen. In a recent interview, Gale explained that he and Zemeckis have felt this way since Back to the Future Part III came out in 1990. They believe the story reached a natural conclusion with the third film, and Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s diagnosis further solidified that decision.

No Michael J. Fox Means No Back to the Future 4

According to Gale, fans have been constantly asking about a fourth installment ever since the third one came out. He says their response to those requests was basically either ‘never,’ or a very blunt refusal.

He explained they concluded the story at the end of the third film simply because it felt like the natural ending. When Michael J. Fox announced his Parkinson’s diagnosis, it made continuing the series difficult – the thought of a Back to the Future movie without him was unthinkable. So, whenever anyone asks about a fourth film, he points this out, and they usually reconsider the idea.

Gale explained that recreating the magic of the original Back to the Future trilogy in a new movie would be nearly impossible, stating, “If you revisit something too often, it loses its appeal.” While a new film is unlikely, he emphasized that there was still potential to expand the story through other formats, which ultimately led to the creation of the stage musical. He also detailed how the idea for Back to the Future: The Musical originated.

A New Back to the Future Project Was Recently Released

The musical adaptation happened somewhat by chance. Bob Zemeckis and his wife, Leslie, were in New York City in 2005 and saw Mel Brooks’ The Producers. As they left the theater, Leslie suggested that Back to the Future would make a great stage musical, and Bob agreed it was worth exploring with Bob Gale.

Inspired by the concept, Back to the Future: The Musical came to life. It premiered in 2020 and quickly became a hit, even winning the Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2022. Just last month, a documentary showing how the musical was made – titled – became available online, and included a recent interview with Michael J. Fox reflecting on the impact of the Back to the Future series.

The franchise has expanded beyond movies and found success in other areas, notably with an episodic video game developed by Telltale Games. The game featured voice actors from the original films, including Christopher Lloyd, Claudia Wells, Tom Wilson, and Michael J. Fox, who reprised his role by voicing one of Marty McFly’s ancestors. While not a traditional movie, many fans affectionately consider this game to be a fourth installment in the Back to the Future series.
