An Underrated Sword and Sorcery Classic is Coming to Free Streaming (Just In Time For the Remake)

The new Masters of the Universe movie, starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, is coming to theaters this June and is shaping up to be one of the biggest fantasy films of the year. Early looks at the movie are getting fans excited, especially the impressive visuals of the world of Eternia. While we still have a few months to wait to see He-Man, Teela, Evil-Lyn, and the rest on the big screen, there’s some free streaming content available to tide fans over until then.

On April 24th, you can stream the 1987 film Masters of the Universe for free on Kanopy using your library card. Directed by Gary Goddard, the movie features Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, alongside Frank Langella, Courteney Cox, James Tolkan, Christina Pickles, and Meg Foster. While the first live-action Masters of the Universe film wasn’t well-received by critics or at the box office, it has since gained a dedicated following and is now considered a cult classic.

Masters of the Universe Is a Classic ‘80s Sword and Sorcery Fantasy

Let’s be honest, nobody’s claiming the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie is a cinematic masterpiece. Most people, including critics, would agree it’s pretty cheesy and over-the-top. But that’s actually a big part of what makes it fun! The movie perfectly captures the over-the-top style of the 1980s. It feels like a comic book come to life – everything is a bit artificial and exaggerated. The story is definitely wild – two teenagers team up with He-Man, who’s traveled to Earth with his friends, to stop Skeletor from getting a powerful key that could let him conquer not just their planet, Eternia, but the whole universe! But that’s what’s so great about it. It’s epic, with huge action sequences, incredibly high stakes, and a bit of otherworldly adventure for the teens caught in the middle.

Frank Langella’s performance as Skeletor is a true highlight of the film – he’s not only excellent, but clearly having a blast, which makes his villain far more compelling than previous animated versions. Honestly, the biggest question mark surrounding the new reboot isn’t Jared Leto’s ability to play the role, but whether anyone can match Langella’s incredibly high standard. Langella himself has said Skeletor is one of his most cherished roles. With the reboot coming soon, it’s a great time to see what makes his performance so special – and you can watch the film for free! As a bonus, you can also stream the original animated series on Tubi this month.
