Sydney Sweeney’s new, intense thriller is a hit! It did very well in theaters and is now available to watch from home.
The movie The Housemaid first hit theaters on December 19th and became a big hit over the Christmas holidays, continuing to draw audiences into the new year. It then found success online, launching on digital platforms on April 1st. Since then, it’s quickly become a favorite among Starz subscribers, consistently topping the charts according to FlixPatrol.
The new psychological thriller quickly rose to the top spot, hitting No. 1 just two days after its release and remaining there as of April 4th. Before this, the action thriller Turbulence, starring Ray Liotta, was the chart-topper.
What Is The Housemaid About?
The thriller The Housemaid is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name. It tells the story of Millie Calloway, a young woman recently released on parole after a manslaughter conviction, who takes a job as a live-in maid for the wealthy Winchester family. They harbor a dark secret, and Millie, determined to keep her job, accepts the position, even though it means living in a locked attic room.
Paul Feig directed the steamy, suspenseful thriller, working from a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshine. The film starred Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway, alongside Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester, Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester, and featured Michelle Morrone, Elizabeth Perkins, and Indiana Elle.
McFadden’s novels were already incredibly popular, so the film benefited from a built-in fanbase, leading to its strong performance. Though critics gave it a respectable 73% rating (Certified Fresh) based on 200 reviews, audiences overwhelmingly enjoyed the movie, giving it a 92% Verified Hot score.
Viewers loved how closely the movie followed the original story, but they also said it’s a really fun watch even if you’re not familiar with it.
Made for just $35 million, the movie The Housemaid earned over $397.5 million worldwide – more than eleven times its production cost. This made it a huge success in theaters.
The Housemaid Has a Sequel in the Works
Given the enthusiastic response, it’s no surprise that a continuation was announced. Fortunately for readers, the decision wasn’t solely based on the adaptation’s success—Freida McFadden has written several books in the series. The second book, The Housemaid’s Secret, came out in February 2023, and a third, The Housemaid Is Watching, is also now available.
Production on the sequel to The Housemaid, titled The Housemaid’s Secret, is scheduled to begin this year. While Lionsgate hasn’t announced plans to adapt the entire book series, Rebecca Sonnenshine will once again write the script, and Paul Feig is producing and expected to direct. Both Sydney Sweeney and Gabriella Morrone are set to reprise their roles. No other cast members have been confirmed yet, but the film is currently aiming for a release two years after the original, around December 17, 2027.
The Housemaid is streaming on Starz.
