For fans of Elden Ring, it’s hard to imagine another game that could deliver a better experience in the challenging ‘Souls-like’ style. Beyond that, Elden Ring is a fantastic open-world RPG filled with hidden areas, valuable items, interesting characters, and tough bosses. The joy of discovering new things and the rewarding feeling of improving your character through leveling up and finding better equipment are truly exceptional.
While Elden Ring is undoubtedly one of the greatest games ever made, other open-world RPGs provide comparable experiences, and even excel in certain aspects. If you’re looking for a slightly different adventure, these games are all excellent choices.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Before Soulslikes, There Was Monster Hunter
The original Monster Hunter was a groundbreaking 3D action RPG known for its difficult battles against massive monsters. Over time, the series has become more user-friendly, and Monster Hunter Wilds is the most approachable game in the series yet. It’s similar to how Elden Ring‘s open world made it easier to get into the challenging ‘Souls-like’ genre, but Monster Hunter Wilds takes accessibility even further. While there isn’t an ‘easy’ mode, finding and joining a cooperative game is much simpler than in Elden Ring.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can team up with up to three other players online to take on specific monsters, or just explore the world and battle whatever you find. If playing online feels daunting, helpful AI companions can join your hunts instead. Beyond making the game more approachable, Monster Hunter Wilds shares similarities with games like Elden Ring thanks to its extensive weapon customization. With fourteen different weapon types, each is designed to be effective whether you’re playing alone or with others. While it might not have the same level of open-world exploration as Elden Ring, Monster Hunter Wilds delivers more thrilling action thanks to its cooperative play, deep weapon system, and challenging monsters – especially on consoles.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
It’s A Brutal World
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt offers a deeply immersive and challenging world, comparable to Elden Ring, but excels with its detailed and accessible storytelling. Unlike some games that hide information in obscure texts, The Witcher 3 presents its lore directly to the player. The story centers around Geralt, a professional monster hunter, as he races to protect Ciri, a young woman he considers his daughter, from a dangerous, supernatural group of hunters. Beyond the compelling main story, the game features quests that are far more engaging than simple ‘go fetch’ tasks.
Players will likely get lost in the world and enjoy completing every side quest, simply for the fun of it. These quests range from saving people from angry mobs and rescuing children from witches, to helping monsters integrate into society, and much more. The game also features satisfying combat, with options for sword fighting, using stat-boosting potions before challenging hunts, and casting both instant-use and always-active magic spells like fireballs. Unlike Elden Ring, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt lets players customize the difficulty to their preferred level.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
The Value Of Nostalgia
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth delivers a compelling story and gameplay, putting it in direct competition with games like Elden Ring. However, its biggest strength is the powerful nostalgia it evokes. The original Final Fantasy 7, released in 1997 for PlayStation, introduced many players to the RPG genre and significantly boosted the popularity of the Final Fantasy series. Rebirth is the strongest installment in the remake trilogy, a project fans have eagerly anticipated for years. Unlike the first remake, this game gives players the open world they’ve been waiting for, beautifully rendered in HD.
Okay, so playing through Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth between Kalm and the Temple of the Ancients is wild. They’ve taken places I already knew and loved and totally shaken things up, adding new stuff and surprising twists to the story – even as a long-time fan, it kept me guessing! The combat is seriously amazing too. Each character feels totally different with their own weapons and abilities, and you can even pull off combos. Plus, the Materia system lets you customize your party however you want. They’ve even thrown in a bunch of fun mini-games. Honestly, what Rebirth does better than even Elden Ring, in my opinion, is just how much fun it is. It’s got this incredible, lighthearted vibe – like, soldiers breaking into song about being bald, or turning into frogs and hopping around! It’s just… irresistible.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
A Different Type Of Open-World
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Elden Ring offer very different combat experiences. While Elden Ring focuses on direct action, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 uses a system similar to MMOs. Players can initiate battles as they explore, or they might be ambushed by enemies. Each character has customizable hotkeys for their abilities, and using these abilities during combat can trigger a chain of linked attacks. These linked attacks can weaken enemies or unleash powerful finishing moves.
One of the coolest features is the ability for party members to combine into powerful, temporary robotic forms. While it’s much more visually spectacular than Elden Ring, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 still offers a surprisingly similar level of strategic depth in its battles. The game can also be quite challenging – enemies of varying strengths often appear together, which encourages players to return later with stronger characters, much like tackling difficult bosses in Elden Ring.
Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth
An Evolving Honolulu Strip
A standout feature of Elden Ring is its flexibility – you aren’t locked into a specific class when you start playing and can change your style later. However, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth takes this concept even further with its ‘Jobs’ system, which is easily one of the best in recent role-playing games. These Jobs are incredibly varied and often humorous, letting you play as anything from a surfer to a chef, or even a retired police officer. Each Job has unique attacks fitting the profession. While some Jobs are exclusive to certain characters to create differences between the heroes, the system is generally very open and allows for a lot of experimentation.
Unlike many RPGs, characters aren’t locked into specific classes, and actually become more powerful by mixing abilities from different classes. Battles are turn-based and take place in the streets and areas around Honolulu. The game, much like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, features surprisingly humorous side quests that are as engaging as those found in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – a trademark of the Yakuza series. Even seemingly ordinary tasks, like helping a taco truck owner or a street performer, quickly become captivating. With its flexible Job system, tough but rewarding combat, detailed cities to explore, and a compelling story, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is a strong contender, even when compared to a game like Elden Ring.
