Project Hail Mary has rocketed past a historic box office milestone.
The new science fiction film, based on Andy Weir’s popular novel, features Ryan Gosling as a teacher sent on a desperate mission to save the sun from a mysterious threat. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie also stars Academy Award nominee Sandra Hüller (known for Anatomy of a Fall). Project Hail Mary launched on March 20th and quickly became Amazon MGM Studios’ biggest box office hit, staying at number one for two weeks.
According to Variety, Project Hail Mary is predicted to reach a worldwide box office total of $420.7 million by the end of its third weekend in theaters. This includes $217 million earned domestically and $203.7 million internationally. The film was the first of the year to surpass $200 million domestically and is now only the third Ryan Gosling movie to ever earn over $400 million worldwide.
The film Project Hail Mary is performing exceptionally well, ranking just behind Ryan Gosling’s La La Land ($523.1 million) and Barbie ($1.447 billion) in terms of box office earnings. It has already earned more overall than several of his other major films, including Blade Runner 2049 ($277.9 million), Crazy, Stupid, Love ($145.1 million), The Big Short ($133.4 million), and The Notebook ($118.6 million).
As of now, Project Hail Mary is the highest-grossing English-language film of 2026. However, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is quickly gaining ground, having earned around $375 million worldwide in its first five days and is expected to overtake Project Hail Mary soon. Currently, only the Chinese film Pegasus 3 ($609.1 million) has earned more globally this year.
Considering how quickly Project Hail Mary has reached this important point, it looks likely to become profitable in cinemas. This wasn’t certain, especially since the movie cost a reported $200 million to make – almost twice the $108 million budget of the previous film based on an Andy Weir novel, 2015’s The Martian.
With a large production budget, Project Hail Mary needed to earn around $500 million just to cover its costs. Reaching that goal would put it among the top 50 highest-grossing science fiction films ever made, showing how significant a gamble the filmmakers took. Fortunately, it appears that gamble is proving successful.
It’s still uncertain whether Project Hail Mary will surpass La La Land as Ryan Gosling’s second-highest-grossing film. However, it has a good chance, especially considering the lack of major competing releases in the near future. While Michael (April 24) and The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1) could be big hits, there aren’t any other similar sci-fi movies scheduled to open until May 22, when The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theaters.
