Critics and audiences are disagreeing again, this time over a new Netflix film. Despite receiving very negative reviews from critics (only 10%), the movie has quickly become popular with viewers and is currently #7 on Netflix’s most-watched list. Fans are praising its story and how it portrays certain groups, giving it a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This gap between critic and audience scores is similar to what happened with the 2024 film Reagan, which had an 80% difference in ratings (18% from critics, 98% from audiences), though critics were slightly more positive about that film.
Clika is a film made by and starring newcomers, achieving a lot despite limited industry connections. It follows Chito, a musician determined to become a star. When a video of his performance goes viral, he’s suddenly launched into a world he doesn’t know, with a chance to impact Mexican-American music. However, things quickly become complicated, and Chito finds himself caught up in a much more dangerous situation than he anticipated.
Critics and Audiences Just Can’t Agree on Clika
Critics generally agree that the film Clicka feels like a weak copy of 8 Mile. Instead of celebrating Mexican-American culture and its energetic music, it relies on tired stereotypes. As critic Jeffrey Anderson puts it, while fans of Música Mexicana might recognize the genre’s influence, the movie is predictable and doesn’t capture the true spirit of the music. Many online viewers share this opinion, with one commenting that they expected a story about the challenges faced by the Latino community, but instead received more clichés and the objectification of women.
While some viewers weren’t impressed, many others praised Clika for its suspense, emotional depth, and unexpected love story. Though it doesn’t offer a particularly nuanced portrayal of culture, audiences generally found it to be a satisfying coming-of-age story with a glamorous, underdog-to-success vibe that helped them forgive some of the plot choices. One viewer described it as a great entry point to the corridos tumbados music genre, with a feel-good ending. Ultimately, Clika isn’t for everyone, and whether you’ll enjoy it really depends on your expectations.
