5 Biggest Things We Learned From HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Preview

As a long-time fan, I was excited to get a sneak peek at the upcoming Harry Potter series heading to HBO Max in 2026, and the recent preview, Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, didn’t disappoint. It offered a fascinating look at how they’re bringing the books to life for television. What’s really interesting is the format: instead of condensing each book into a two-hour movie, they’re giving each story a full eight-episode season. This means we’ll finally get to see all the details and moments that had to be left out of the films – it’s a dream come true for Potterheads like me!

After watching Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, we gained a new appreciation for the series and are even more excited about it than we were before.

5) The HBO Max Series Will Do Deeper Into the Harry Potter Lore

The documentary Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic began with John Lithgow (who played Dumbledore) explaining that each season of the series—eight episodes long—would explore parts of the wizarding world only hinted at in the films, giving the story more space to develop. This approach extends to the set design, with locations previously seen only briefly in the movies now shown with rich detail.

As a huge fan, I’m really excited about how the show is going to expand on what we saw in the movies. Apparently, John Lithgow mentioned they’re going to show us more of what characters were up to around what we actually saw on screen – things happening just outside of Harry’s perspective, since the films were always focused on what he saw. It sounds like they’re really opening up the world. The designers also let slip that we’ll see magical folks interacting with the Muggle world in ways that go unnoticed, and how they pull that off. Basically, this series promises to show us the full scope of the magical world – something the movies could only give us glimpses of.

4) The Casting Directors Had Over 40,000 Auditions

The preview of Harry Potter revealed a surprisingly extensive casting process. Casting directors Emily Brockmann and Lucy Bevan reviewed over 40,000 children from across the United Kingdom before making their final selections. Alastair Stout was the first actor cast, landing the role of Ron Weasley after an audition in Manchester. They then found Arabella Stanton in London, who was chosen to play Hermione Granger.

The casting choices happened for different reasons. Stout successfully portrayed Ron’s innocence, while Stanton demonstrated the qualities of a leading character – intelligence and playfulness – with a memorable scene where she playfully snorted while discussing Ron and Harry with her parents. This search took them to Glasgow, Scotland, where they discovered their Harry Potter. Dominic McLaughlin impressed them with a self-assured poem he’d written, and they agreed he was the obvious and ideal choice for the role.

3) The Sets of Harry Potter are Massive

Next to present were the production designers, who described the sets as incredibly large and detailed, including Diagon Alley, Hogwarts’ halls, classrooms, and even the professors’ offices and student dormitories. Production designer Mara LePere-Schloop explained they aimed to capture the fun and wonder of being a magical child. She also noted that the show’s world-building goes beyond what viewers have seen in the films, offering a much more expansive experience.

Schloop believes the show can better explain how all the different locations from the movies and series connect. He points out the contrast between the realistic and magical worlds, seen in everything from set design to costumes. People in the real world dress in the muted styles of 1991, while the magical world is vibrant and fantastical. This difference is also reflected in the clothing – Muggle outfits are mostly plain, while Hogwarts uniforms are bright and colorful, highlighting the wonder of magic.

2) The Harry Potter HBO Series Is Using Practical Effects

The new HBO series features impressively large and detailed sets. The designers have emphasized a commitment to realism, extending to everything from the plants and Hogwarts’ design to the creatures. The show aims to portray the magic of Harry Potter as deeply rooted in the natural world. To achieve this, the team is prioritizing practical effects like animatronics over computer-generated imagery for the creatures and animals.

As a huge cinema fan, I’m really excited about the work John Nolan’s done on this new HBO Max series. He was part of the team behind the original Harry Potter films, and he’s bringing that same practical magic to this show. They’ve built everything from the owls to creatures like Scabbers and Flubberworms using a mix of animatronics and special effects – even fire-breathing toads, all done for real! I think this commitment to practical effects will make the series feel incredibly immersive and keep you completely hooked in the story.

1) The Actors Who Play the Professors Realize Their Place

I recently spoke with Paapa Essiedu, who’s taking on the role of Severus Snape, and it was fascinating to hear how deeply the Harry Potter books resonated with him as a child – he was only seven when they first came out! Now, he’s getting the chance to play such an iconic character. And then there’s John Lithgow, who shared with me that he was approaching 80 when he signed on, and it really hit him just how significant this project is, knowing he’ll be nearing 90 by the time it wraps. It’s incredible to see both actors approach this beloved franchise with such personal connection and at such different, yet impactful, stages in their lives.

The cast reflected on the significant impact the books and original movies had on their lives. They also expressed excitement about introducing the series to a new generation, including the young actors just beginning their careers. The returning actors feel a responsibility to both the long-time fans and those discovering the story for the first time. The documentary, Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, concluded with a shot of the Hogwarts Express departing from King’s Cross Station, symbolizing a new adventure for Harry Potter and its dedicated fanbase.
