State of Decay 3 Boss Explains Why Development Has Taken So Long

The lead at Undead Labs recently explained the lengthy development process for State of Decay 3. The game was first announced with a teaser back in 2020, but there’s been very little news since then, leading to speculation about what was happening with the project. Now, we have a clearer understanding of why it’s taken so long and why the studio has been quiet.

In a recent interview with Sunny Games, Undead Labs’ Philip Holt explained the early reveal of State of Decay 3. He clarified that when the game was first announced in 2020, development hadn’t actually begun. The trailer was purely conceptual, intended to showcase the studio’s vision for the sequel. Actual work on the game only started after the teaser was released, which accounts for the limited amount of information available over the past few years.

According to Holt, the initial trailer for State of Decay 3 was created very early in development – before the game or even a dedicated team existed. At that point, the game was essentially just an idea outlined in a Word document, representing the very first stages of software creation. The trailer itself was produced by Blur Studio and was entirely pre-rendered, showcasing the team’s initial vision for what the game could be.

State of Decay 3 Won’t Feature One Previously Teased Element

Because the trailer was just a concept, not everything shown will make it into the final version of State of Decay 3. For example, the zombie animals featured in the teaser won’t actually be in the game. While the developers haven’t said why, players hoping to battle zombie deer will be disappointed – they won’t be included.

Undead Labs is planning to start an alpha test for State of Decay 3 in May, giving players their first chance to try the game. You can find more information about the test and how to register to participate here.
