Be warned, this article contains minor spoilers for the movie Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. A hidden horror series recently concluded after two weeks, though many viewers didn’t realize it was a trilogy. While not officially labeled as parts one, two, and three, these films, much like Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy, shared common themes and details that created a surprising connection between them.
The horror films Ready or Not, Abigail, and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come were all made by the directing team Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who work together under the name Radio Silence. They designed these movies to be entertaining takes on classic horror themes, like slasher films and vampire stories. But despite their different stories, the three films actually share a surprising number of connections.
Ready Or Not, Abigail, And Ready Or Not 2 Form A Trilogy About Class Struggles
A central idea in all three movies is the stark contrast between the rich and the poor. The Ready or Not films are particularly direct in their message, portraying the wealthy as people who would do anything – even make a deal with the devil – to keep their money.
The films’ silliness actually works in their favor. Viewers can enjoy laughing at how ridiculous the whole idea and how it’s carried out are, especially considering how inept the Le Dolas family is.
Abigail delves into the hardships faced by people struggling with poverty. Melissa Barrera plays Joey, a character many viewers will connect with because she’s determined to provide for her son, no matter what it takes.
While the story pushes things to the limit – portraying her as a kidnapper holding a rich man’s daughter for ransom – the character still evokes some sympathy. Even Abigail, who turns out to be a vampire herself, ultimately believes the character deserves to be reunited with her son.
Beyond sharing common themes, the films are linked by recurring elements. We see characters who eagerly abandon their humble beginnings to climb the social ladder, whether by marrying into the wealthy Le Dolas family or by embracing vampirism.
I found a really interesting moment in Ready or Not 2 where Grace lays out why she won’t marry into one of the council families, even if it could guarantee her and her loved ones freedom. She basically argues it would mean sacrificing who she is, selling out her values – and it’s a surprisingly powerful scene that really gets at the heart of her character.
All Three Films Share An Explosive Punchline
A consistent and striking feature of all three movies is the way vampires in Abigail and members of both the Le Dolas family and the High Council meet their end. Each film culminates in at least one character suddenly and violently exploding into a mess of blood and gore – completely out of the blue. It’s shocking, and surprisingly funny.
Just like the recurring Cornetto ice cream in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End, this is a playful way to connect the three movies and give fans a little inside joke.
What really makes these scenes great is how the characters react – they’re just frozen, covered in blood, and utterly stunned. It’s a perfect, darkly humorous moment.
The movies Ready or Not, Abigail, and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come form a fantastic, though loosely connected, trilogy that horror fans shouldn’t miss. While not a traditional series with a continuous storyline, these films from Radio Silence share common themes and ideas, making them a great watch together.
