J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter book came out in 1997, and the series that followed became the biggest success story in modern publishing. The seven books sold over 600 million copies around the world, captivating readers of all ages in over 80 languages. Warner Bros. also turned the books into eight highly-rated movies between 2001 and 2011 – a remarkably consistent record for such a large franchise. Rowling continued to build the Wizarding World beyond the main books with additional stories, plays, and the Fantastic Beasts films, keeping the magic alive for fans.
HBO is creating a new TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, scheduled to begin on Christmas Day 2026. The first season will cover Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in eight episodes. Leading the project is Francesca Gardiner, the Emmy-winning showrunner of Succession, along with director Mark Mylod, who has worked on both Game of Thrones and Succession. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. New actors Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will play Harry, Hermione, and Ron, respectively. HBO intends to adapt all seven books over ten years, and the series may continue the Harry Potter story beyond the original books.
7) Luna Lovegood

I always loved Luna Lovegood, and I’m so happy with how her life turned out! It’s just… perfect. She followed her heart and became a really well-known magizoologist, traveling all over the wizarding world studying magical creatures – exactly what she always dreamed of. And it gets even better – she married Rolf Scamander, Newt Scamander’s grandson! That means she’s part of that whole Fantastic Beasts family now, which is amazing. They had twins, Lorcan and Lysander, and honestly, those names just fit her whimsical personality. We see her briefly at the end of Deathly Hallows, and she was at the Quidditch World Cup in Cursed Child, though that story was mostly about Harry’s kids. Still, knowing Luna’s out there, living her best life and studying creatures, just makes me smile.
6) Neville Longbottom

After the war, Neville Longbottom transformed from the shy and often-forgetful boy we first met into a highly admired member of the wizarding world. J.K. Rowling revealed that Neville initially worked as an Auror, but he eventually discovered his passion and returned to Hogwarts as the Herbology professor. He married Hannah Abbott, who ran the Leaky Cauldron, meaning they both contributed to the wizarding community – Neville through education and Hannah through business. As shown in The Cursed Child, Neville continued teaching at Hogwarts, even instructing a new generation of students like Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy.
5) Draco Malfoy

The final chapter of Deathly Hallows briefly shows an older Draco Malfoy at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters with his wife, Astoria Greengrass, and their son, Scorpius. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child develops this picture much further. Astoria, who didn’t share her family’s traditional beliefs about pure-blood supremacy, suffered from a hereditary illness and passed away during the play, leaving Draco a widower and Scorpius without a mother. Throughout The Cursed Child, Draco also struggles with his family’s past, facing the consequences of their beliefs while trying to shield his son, Scorpius, from that legacy.
4) Ginny Weasley

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I always loved Ginny Weasley, and it was great to see her story continue after the big battle. She really made a name for herself as a Quidditch player with the Holyhead Harpies, becoming a star athlete before moving into sports journalism. Eventually, she became a senior Quidditch correspondent for the Daily Prophet – a fantastic career! Of course, she and Harry had three kids – James, Albus, and Lily – and I always thought it was a lovely touch how their names honored people Harry had lost and cared about. In The Cursed Child, Ginny really acts as the voice of reason, especially when it comes to Harry and their son Albus. Their relationship is pretty tense, and Ginny’s level-headedness is a key part of the whole story.
3) Ron Weasley

Following his time at Hogwarts, Ron Weasley first worked as an Auror with Harry. He later decided to join his brother George in running Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. This was especially meaningful because George had lost his twin brother, Fred, during the Battle of Hogwarts, and Ron’s help was a sign of deep loyalty. Ron married Hermione Granger, and together they had two children, Rose and Hugo. In the play The Cursed Child, Ron mostly provides comic relief, with the story focusing more on Harry, Ginny, and Hermione. Some fans were disappointed by this, feeling it didn’t reflect the character development Ron had shown throughout the seven books.
2) Hermione Granger

Following the events of The Deadly Hallows, Hermione Granger joined the Ministry of Magic, working with magical creatures – a natural extension of her efforts with S.P.E.W. at Hogwarts. She steadily advanced, eventually moving into the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and ultimately becoming Minister for Magic, the most powerful position in the wizarding world. In The Cursed Child, we see Hermione at the peak of her career, facing a difficult situation that challenges both her leadership and her closest relationships.
1) Harry Potter

Following his victory over Voldemort at the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry Potter became an Auror, working as a magical law enforcement officer for the Ministry of Magic. He quickly rose through the ranks and was Head of the Auror Office by age 26. The story focuses more on his family life – seeing his children off to Hogwarts – than on his career achievements. Later, in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Harry is shown as Head of Magical Law Enforcement, still bearing the famous scar, but struggling to build a relationship with his son, who feels overshadowed by his father’s reputation.
