Mobile gaming has changed a lot since the beginning of the 21st century. When cell phones first became popular, games were simple, like Snake or Solitaire. But as phones have become more powerful, developers have been able to create much more complex and creative games.
I’ve always loved how a game can really grab you, even with a simple idea. Something with fun gameplay and a little bit of interaction can turn into a game you play forever! That’s especially true for endless runners – a little bit of personality and clever design can make something that could be a quick distraction into a seriously addictive hobby. Take Disney Crossy Road, for example. It’s basically a fresh take on Frogger that came out way back in 2016, and honestly, it’s still one of the most fun and addictive mobile games I’ve ever played.
What Was Disney Crossy Road
Building on the success of the hit mobile game Crossy Road, Disney Crossy Road was surprisingly captivating, though it didn’t stay popular for very long. Like an extended version of the classic Frogger, Crossy Road offered a playful take on the “endless runner” games that were popular on mobile devices, alongside titles like Flappy Bird and Temple Run. Crossy Road first came out in 2014, and Disney Crossy Road followed as its first official spin-off a few years later.
Disney’s version of the game didn’t change the basic gameplay, but it really came alive with hundreds of Disney characters. They also cleverly reimagined classic songs in 8-bit style and redesigned levels to fit each character. Updates kept things fresh by adding even more levels and characters, expanding the game’s overall content. While there’s no real ending or story, unlocking beloved Disney and classic characters gave players a clear goal and a sense of accomplishment. Exploring the charming, pixel-art Disney world was the real reward. Ultimately, Disney Crossy Road took the original game’s strengths and amplified them.
Why Disney Crossy Road Was So Much Fun
The game was simple to learn, with its repeating gameplay and easy controls, but it was the small details that really kept me hooked. I downloaded Disney Crossy Road when it first came out just to see what it was like. Having played the original game before, I had a good idea of what to expect. I thought it would be a fun, casual game to play when I had a few minutes, reminding me of the Frogger game I used to enjoy on my Game Boy.
While the game wasn’t perfect and had its share of bugs, the little details in the world, the adorable characters, and my desire to unlock them all—something I always enjoy in games—really drew me in. What started as a quick distraction unexpectedly became a surprisingly addictive game. For over a year, Disney Crossy Road was one of my most-played games, no matter what device I was using. I eventually stopped playing only when I got a new phone and lost access to it.
What Happened To Disney Crossy Road
Even though Disney Crossy Road was a well-liked spin-off of Crossy Road, its servers were shut down on March 12, 2020, and the game was removed from app stores like Google Play. If you already had it downloaded, it might still have worked. Unlike many online games that disappear when player numbers drop, Disney Crossy Road wasn’t shut down because it was unpopular. In fact, regular updates kept players interested, despite some technical issues. It appears the game was discontinued simply because it was becoming too expensive to maintain. The developers didn’t say much publicly, but the cost of running the game seems to be the main reason it wasn’t able to continue indefinitely.
It seems the cost of licensing both Crossy Road and the Disney characters was very high, and that’s often led to similar mobile games being discontinued. That’s likely why the game ended in 2020 after a final update featuring DuckTales. It was a genuinely enjoyable game, so it’s a shame it’s gone. Honestly, it’s probably a good thing – it frees up my time to focus on newer games. I spent countless hours playing, guiding Simba through the Pride Lands or exploring the Haunted Mansion. Despite its simple gameplay and my preference for more complex games, I’ll always fondly remember this mobile game.
