Ever since Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park came out in 1993, dinosaurs have been a popular subject for movies – everything from big-budget sequels to low-budget imitations and cartoons. While many have tried, few have reached the same level of success as the original. Recently, in 2025, a standout dinosaur film – not part of the Jurassic Park series – was released and is now available to stream on Hulu, with fans eagerly awaiting its follow-up.
Luke Sparke’s dinosaur horror film, Primitive War, is getting a sequel planned for next year. But you can watch the original now on Hulu! Released in 2025, the movie – which came out around the same time as Jurassic World Rebirth – started streaming on April 4th. Set during the Vietnam War in 1968, it follows a special forces team fighting for survival when they’re hunted by prehistoric dinosaurs while searching for a lost group of soldiers in a remote valley. Primitive War is currently popular on Hulu, ranking at No. 10 overall and No. 3 among movies, behind Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice and Pizza Movie.
Primitive War Is a More Violent Alternative to Jurassic Park
Imagine a grittier, more intense version of Jurassic Park. Primitive War blends the dinosaur action of that classic with the war-movie feel of films like Platoon and Apocalypse Now. It’s a brutal take on the dinosaur genre, portraying the creatures as genuinely dangerous predators. Unlike Jurassic Park, where dinosaurs are often contained, the dinosaurs in this film actively hunt and ambush soldiers in a chaotic jungle setting, creating a desperate fight for survival. The movie is packed with dinosaur action, featuring more creatures and violent encounters per minute than recent Jurassic World films. It also strives for realism, with dinosaurs like feathered Utahraptors and T. Rexes making bird-like sounds, and plenty of graphic, bloody scenes.
Most critics and audiences agreed that Primitive War‘s darker, more intense, and monster-filled action made it a hit. It earned a 63% score from critics and an 86% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it above all Jurassic Park movies except the very first one and 2015’s Jurassic World. It even performed better than 2025’s Jurassic World Rebirth, which received scores of 50% from critics and 70% from audiences. This success led to the announcement in January that Primitive War 2 is officially being made, with a planned release in 2027. The sequel, which will focus on things spiraling out of control, will once again be written, directed, and produced by Sparke.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu has added a lot of great content this April, including the film Primitive War. So far this month, they’ve added titles like The Day After Tomorrow, The Devil Wears Prada, Napoleon Dynamite, and 21 Jump Street. They also premiered a new original comedy called Pizza Movie, featuring Gaten Matarazzo and Sean Giambrone, which could become a future cult classic.
