Brian Cox’s Surprising Secret to 24-Year Marriage to Nicole Ansari-Cox

For Alan Ruck, 79, having separate personal spaces has been essential to his marriage of over twenty years with his wife, Nicole Ansari-Cox.

He explained to The Times on April 3rd that maintaining independence means taking responsibility for our own actions. He put it simply, saying, “It’s as simple as that.”

They have separate homes in the U.S., but live close to each other in the U.K.—only about nine minutes apart.

Brian, a three-time divorcee, explained that both he and his partner need their own personal space. He believes being constantly together can feel stifling and hinder creativity. He feels it’s important to have the freedom to be independent.

Throughout their years together, their relationship has stayed strong, and they’re now getting ready to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.

Nicole, he emphasized “is considerable. She’s one of the most generous and caring people.”  

Let me tell you, their romance is one for the books! It all started way back in 1990. I remember reading Nicole talk about it – she was absolutely mesmerized watching Brian perform King Lear. She said they instantly connected, it was like magic! But she also admitted she was just a young woman then, so things didn’t really blossom until they started dating in ’98.

Eight years after first meeting by chance in New York, they fell in love and married in Las Vegas in 2002. They then had two sons, Orson, 24, and Torin, 21. Brian also has a son, Alan, 54, and a daughter, Margaret, with his second wife, Caroline Burt.

Nicole and Brian have been together for many years, but they only recently worked together on the new movie, Glenrothan. This film marks Brian’s first time directing.

The graduate of Troy University has consistently supported his wife, who told The Times in 2024 that her career flourished before she moved to London with him. She explained that when she relocated to support his career, her own career unexpectedly stalled.

In a recent interview with The Times, Brian recognized the sacrifices Nicole made for him, saying, “Nicole really gave up a lot to support me. It wasn’t easy for her, and I think she deserves to be acknowledged for that.”

The well-known fashion mentor from Project Runway revealed in February 2026 that he hasn’t been in a relationship for over forty years, following a painful split.

He confessed to Chelsea Handler on her podcast, Dear Chelsea, that he’d been having many casual encounters. He explained this happened around 1982, a time when AIDS was first becoming known. He also revealed that he had been completely faithful to him, and he was the only person she’d ever been with.

He explained that his initial sadness quickly transformed into intense anger, as he feared the encounter might have been life-threatening. For ten years afterward, he was tested for HIV every six months, but thankfully, the results were always negative.

Whenever he started to connect with someone, he was reminded of a painful experience from his past.

He explained that whenever he felt even a little attracted to someone, thoughts of this past experience would flood back to him, overwhelming any romantic feelings and stopping him from pursuing a relationship.

In December 2025, the country singer revealed that his relationship with his wife, Bunnie Xo, had suffered due to intimacy issues before he lost 200 pounds.
