Prime Video has become a popular destination for successful movies and TV shows, and one of its most prominent franchises is . Amidst growing audience weariness with superhero content, this Prime Video series offered a fresh and innovative take on the genre.
The popular show The Boys is a satirical take on superheroes, or “supes,” and explores how power can corrupt. While possessing extraordinary abilities, these heroes often forget the responsibility that comes with them. The show has been a critical and commercial success, and the creators plan to end it after the next season, ensuring it doesn’t run on for too long. Before its premiere on April 8th, The Boys received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The new superhero series is getting fantastic reviews, with a 96% approval rating based on 26 critics. It’s even been designated “Certified Fresh”! While the score might change as more reviews are published, it’s currently very strong. Since the first episode hasn’t aired yet, there’s no audience feedback available just yet.
The Boys Season 5 Maintains Its Quality
The fifth season will be the last for The Boys to ensure the show doesn’t go on for too long. However, the universe will continue to expand with other shows. Gen V is expected to return for a third season, and a new prequel series, Vought Rising, starring Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, is also being developed.
As a huge fan, I’ve been following this show and it’s consistently amazing! Most seasons have gotten over 90% positive reviews, though the first season was still really good at 85% and ‘Certified Fresh’. But honestly, it’s just kept getting better, and the critics seem to agree – especially after seeing the first seven episodes of Season 5. They absolutely loved it!
According to Dais Johnston of Inverse, the series truly comes together as it builds to its exciting conclusion. The stakes suddenly feel very real, the show’s humor feels innovative, and even the way the episodes are structured changes for the better.
Cassondra Feltus from Black Girl Nerds applauded the latest season of The Boys, saying it concluded with a thrilling and explosive finale after five seasons.
Doll notes that the show’s satire resonates with today’s politics, and while some plot points in Season 5 feel familiar, the storytelling doesn’t feel hurried or forced towards a conclusion.
I saw a review from Belen Edwards at Mashable who wasn’t a fan of Season 5, calling it really bleak and depressing. She felt like the show tried to say something about the divisions in America, but ultimately relied on shock tactics instead of offering any meaningful insights.
The Boys Franchise Continues
Okay, so I’m really excited about this new show dropping on Prime Video! The first two episodes are coming out on April 8th, and then they’ll release one episode a week until May 20th. It’s a bit sad the season will wrap then, but thankfully it’s part of a bigger universe that’s still going strong. We haven’t gotten official word on whether Gen V will be back yet, but everything points to Vought Rising being the next big thing from them – I have a feeling it’s going to be awesome!
Both Jensen Ackles and the show’s creator, Eric Kripke, have indicated that they’re hoping for multiple seasons, though its continuation will likely depend on how well the show performs.
Kripke was also the creator of a popular fantasy horror show and brought on several well-known actors for its first four seasons. The upcoming fifth season is planned to be even bigger, and will include a reunion of the show’s three main stars: Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins.
The Boys premieres on Prime Video on Apr. 8.
