New Star Wars Show’s Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Breaks An All-Time Disney+ Record

The audience score for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord on Rotten Tomatoes is the highest ever for a series on Disney+.

Since its launch in 2019 with the first season of The Mandalorian, Disney+ has become the go-to place for live-action and animated Star Wars series. The newest show is Maul – Shadow Lord, an animated series following the iconic character as he tries to regain his strength in the criminal world and exact revenge on the Empire. The first season has 10 episodes, released in batches of two each week, and a second season is already confirmed.

The new Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, has received a very positive initial reaction from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a 97% audience score based on over 50 reviews. It’s important to note this score was calculated right after the first two episodes aired, so it may change as more people watch the season. However, it’s currently the highest audience score any Star Wars show on Disney+ has ever received, either overall or for a single season.

Among Star Wars shows on Disney+, Andor has the second-highest audience score at 89%, while the seventh season of The Clone Wars leads individual seasons with a score of 95%. Although The Clone Wars has a slightly higher overall average of 91%, this includes the six seasons released before Disney+. The following table shows how Maul – Shadow Lord compares to all other Disney+ Star Wars shows, with an asterisk marking shows that have only had one season and haven’t been renewed.

Viewers are loving the new Star Wars show, with many praising its animation, exciting action, and more mature themes. Sam Witwer’s portrayal of Maul is also a standout, and the story’s focus on the criminal underworld is proving to be captivating. The show is a hit with both audiences and critics, currently boasting a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lewis Glazebrook at ScreenRant gave the Maul – Shadow Lord series a 6 out of 10, praising its incredible visuals as the best in the franchise so far. He also appreciated the show’s realistic and serious tone. However, Glazebrook felt the series could have delved deeper into Maul’s character and noted that the short length – only ten episodes of around 22-28 minutes each – was a limitation.

Critics and viewers are loving the show, proving Lucasfilm was smart to announce a second season before the first even finished airing. The first two episodes have plenty of action, but also focus on building the story. Knowing more is on the way encourages viewers to stick with it, as this is just the start of a bigger story about Maul.

While the ex-Sith Lord is the main focus of reviews for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, several other characters are also impressing viewers. These include Jedi apprentice Devon Izara (played by Gideon Adlon), detective Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura) and his droid companion, Two-Boots (Richard Ayoade), the Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki (Dennis Haysbert), and the criminal boss Looti Vario (Chris Diamantopoulos).

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord releases new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+.
