It’s rare for a comedy to achieve the same level of consistent quality, critical praise, and impact on popular culture as Hacks. The show has become a consistent award winner for HBO, largely thanks to Jean Smart’s outstanding performance as Deborah Vance. In fact, Smart hasn’t lost an Emmy for her work on Hacks yet.
Hannah Einbinder won a Supporting Actress award last season, a well-deserved recognition after being nominated several times for her performance as Ava Daniels. The show Hacks itself is also highly acclaimed, consistently earning nominations for its writing, directing, and as an Outstanding Comedy Series, demonstrating its strong reputation in the television industry.
This show is all about the world of entertainment – stand-up, writing for comedy, and how performers stay relevant. But it’s easy to connect with because it focuses on the relationship between two generations, Deborah and Ava, and how their different perspectives shape the story.
Most TV shows don’t get to end when their creators want them to, but the team behind Hacks – Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky – always knew how they wanted the story to unfold over five seasons. Season four took Deborah through both career successes and setbacks, setting up a compelling final chapter in season five – and a fitting conclusion to the show’s complicated, often fraught, central relationship.
Ending Hacks With Season 5 Is The Right Move
Ending Hacks after season 5 feels right because the show was always designed as a series of clear, evolving stages. Each season explored a different chapter in Deborah’s journey – starting with her Vegas comeback, then a tour, followed by her attempt to get a late-night show, and ultimately, actually having one.
Unlike most comedies that focus on everyday life, Hacks feels more like a story with a clear direction. Though the characters are central to the show, the plot is always progressing towards their next big achievement or emotional turning point, giving it a natural conclusion. The creators always intended to have a specific ending in mind, and that focus ultimately makes the show stronger.
Instead of dragging out the same storyline, the show Hacks has successfully refreshed itself each season, all while moving towards a final goal. Last season especially felt like a turning point: Deborah accomplished her lifelong dream of hosting a late-night show, but ultimately chose to give it up rather than compromise Ava’s future.
That choice fundamentally changed Deborah and Ava’s dynamic, giving them a chance to redefine their connection after the intense season 4 finale of Hacks. Season 5 could serve as a perfect conclusion to their story. Ending the show now would maintain its strong pace and prevent it from becoming diluted.
Even though the central storyline of Hacks has wrapped up, the show’s world feels expansive enough for more stories. Season 4 almost seemed like a suggestion for a spin-off series focusing on Deborah and Ava’s company, as well as Randi.
Hacks Is A Toxic Love Story At Heart
Instead of a typical show about friends, Hacks feels more like a deeply flawed, but non-romantic, love story. While unhealthy relationships and complicated friendships can seem alike, they’re driven by different kinds of feelings.
Deborah needs Ava’s creative input to stay current, and Ava depends on Deborah for guidance, support, and to feel secure in her career. Despite repeatedly causing each other pain – through things like betrayals, job losses, and public embarrassment – they always manage to reconcile and return to each other.

The show portrays conflicts much like the ups and downs of a romantic relationship, featuring familiar emotions like longing, jealousy, and eventual forgiveness. The connection between the characters is complicated by a power imbalance – they’re both boss and employee, and experienced legend and newcomer – which creates a toxic but unbreakable bond.
Even Jean Smart, who plays Deborah, has described the relationship between her character and Ava as a complex connection – like a marriage where they both need and frustrate each other. This intense dynamic is what gives Hacks its emotional depth and sets it apart from typical sitcoms about friends or coworkers.
Hacks season 5 debuts Thursday, April 9th, on HBO Max.
