While it’s a great pick for pirate fans, the show offers broad appeal with its stunning visuals, well-developed characters, and exciting, big-budget action.
As a huge movie and TV buff, I’ve always been fascinated by pirate stories, and Black Sails really blew me away. It takes the classic Golden Age of Piracy and presents it in a way that feels surprisingly authentic, even though it’s mostly made up. Honestly, I think it was a better show than Game of Thrones when that was the big thing everyone was talking about, but it didn’t get nearly the attention it deserved for a long time. It took a while to find its footing – the first season was a little rough – but the second season? Absolutely incredible. The battle scenes in Black Sails are remarkably realistic. A pirate historian specifically noted the historical accuracy of one scene depicting Anne Bonny, Jack Rackham, and Blackbeard preparing for battle and dividing their crews. Historian Rebecca Simon rated the scene a 7 out of 10.
Although Black Sails was inspired by real events, it significantly altered the timeline and interactions of characters from Treasure Island. One historical event the show could have shown was the clash between Vane and Calico Jack. The reasons for changing this part of history aren’t clear, but it didn’t detract from the overall story.
Black Sails Has Aged Like Fine Wine
As a critic, I’ve been revisiting shows from the early 2010s, and I have to say, Black Sails really holds up. A lot of things from that era feel dated now, but this series doesn’t. It’s built on solid foundations – compelling drama and exciting action – things that never really go out of style, especially when it looks as good as Black Sails does. Pirate stories can be trendy, but strong storytelling? That’s forever.
While Black Sails definitely features violence – some scenes are particularly harsh – the show offers more than just shock value. It’s a character-focused story with realistic, engaging characters, and it explores important themes like colonialism and the abuse of power.
