As a movie fan, I’ve noticed there’s always a handful of films everyone loves to bash. Think Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, Cats, and even Transformers: Dark of the Moon – a title that barely makes sense! Honestly, a lot of the criticism these movies get is probably fair. They all have their problems, let’s just say that.
It’s funny how audiences sometimes really enjoy criticizing movies – either ones that aren’t actually bad, or even ones they secretly love! Many films fall into this category, but here’s a look at seven of the most popular examples that get a lot of hate despite actually being well-liked.
The Incredible Hulk

Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk, has been portrayed by several actors in movies. Most recently, Mark Ruffalo has played the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But before the Avengers films became so popular, Edward Norton starred as the Hulk in the 2008 film, The Incredible Hulk.
People criticize this movie for things like its special effects and how it differs from the original comics. But it really doesn’t deserve the negativity! Despite what some say, a lot of viewers actually enjoy The Incredible Hulk. Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of the Hulk is great, and this film – the last solo Hulk movie we’ve seen – boasts a fantastic cast, including Liv Tyler, and is simply a fun experience.
Twilight

Okay, let’s be real – if you spend five minutes on TikTok, you’ll quickly realize Twilight is still a punchline. And honestly, the movies are pretty silly – even the actors seem to admit it! But here’s the thing: they were massively popular, and remain so. I think a lot of that online mockery is just a cover for the fact that people secretly (or not so secretly!) still love those sparkly vampires and angsty romance. It’s a weird phenomenon, but you can’t deny the staying power.
Even though the sparkly vampire and teenage romance isn’t for everyone, these movies were definitely popular. They might not be considered masterpieces, but despite a lot of criticism, many people clearly enjoy them, which explains why they’ve remained well-known over time.
Thor: Love and Thunder

Many people dislike the 2022 film Thor: Love and Thunder. Like other recent Marvel movies, it’s been criticized because it came after the huge Avengers: Endgame and didn’t quite live up to expectations. It also received negative reviews for being too silly compared to earlier Thor films.
A lot of the negativity surrounding this movie feels excessive. It’s definitely not the worst Marvel Cinematic Universe film, and if you put aside complaints about where the MCU is heading, it’s actually quite funny and entertaining. While it’s understandable people are upset about another powerful female character being removed, much of the harshest criticism seems unrelated and ignores the fact that many viewers genuinely enjoyed the movie.
Jurassic World & Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

While Jurassic Park remains a beloved classic, the sequels haven’t quite lived up to its success – and that includes the Jurassic World films. Although Jurassic World Reborn was a slight improvement, the earlier Jurassic World movies were generally poorly received by audiences.
Despite some criticism, many people secretly enjoy Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. These films deliver everything you’d expect from a dinosaur movie – lots of different dinosaurs, thrilling escapes, and exciting action. The widely shared clip of the Brachiosaurus being left behind in Fallen Kingdom is a clear sign that the movie resonated with audiences.
National Treasure

While Twilight is famous for becoming a meme, National Treasure gets just as much attention – and not always in a good way. Even though the first movie came out over 20 years ago, people still love to poke fun at it online. It’s true the films have some silly and unbelievable scenes, but that’s actually what makes them enjoyable – and secretly lovable.
Watching Nicolas Cage race around discovering “clues” in bizarre and illogical ways is simply entertaining, and the National Treasure movies deliver plenty of genuinely funny scenes. Not every film needs to be a masterpiece, and while these movies aren’t aiming for awards, a lot of people secretly enjoy watching them.
Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Movies

Tom Holland is a fantastic Spider-Man, and the praise he receives for the role is well-earned. The upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will likely demonstrate that again. But despite how much 90s kids might resist, Tobey Maguire will always be a beloved Spider-Man for those who grew up watching his films.
It was pretty silly when Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker dramatically swept his hair across his face to show off his angsty side after being affected by Venom. But despite the jokes about his performance now, the huge excitement around the Spider-Man reunion in Spider-Man: No Way Home proves that these movies are genuinely loved by a lot of people.
The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy

The Star Wars prequel trilogy still receives a lot of criticism. While opinions have softened over time, especially from those who watched the films as children and now appreciate them, there’s still considerable negativity towards the trilogy.
Despite the criticism, these movies are actually quite popular with a lot of people, including newer generations. Iconic lightsaber battles like the ones on Mustafar and in ‘Duel of the Fates’ are undeniably impressive, and the recent return of Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen shows there’s a real fondness and nostalgia for the prequel trilogy among fans.
