A ‘90s Disaster Thriller Everyone’s Forgotten About Just Returned To Streaming on Peacock

The 1990s were the golden age for disaster movies. After a quieter period in the 80s, the genre exploded back onto the scene with huge, exciting films like Twister, Independence Day, and Armageddon. While some ‘90s disaster movies haven’t stayed as well-known, one forgotten thriller recently became available on Peacock, offering fans a chance to rediscover it.

Many consider Dante’s Peak a hidden treasure of 90s disaster films. Directed by Roger Donaldson and starring Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton, the movie tells the story of a volcanologist and a mayor working together to protect their Pacific Northwest town from a newly awakened, dangerous volcano. Despite a large $116 million budget and initially receiving unfavorable reviews (34% from critics and 39% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes), it’s a film that has aged well and deserves more recognition. Fans of 90s disaster movies can now watch Dante’s Peak on Peacock, where it became available on April 1st.

Dante’s Peak Is a Forgotten 1997 Volcano Movie Worth Revisiting

Following the success of Twister, which brought environmental disaster movies back into the spotlight, 1997 saw a surge of volcano films. Dante’s Peak came out the same year as Volcano, a film starring Tommy Lee Jones about an eruption in Los Angeles. Volcano directly competed with, and arguably became more well-known than, Dante’s Peak. However, Dante’s Peak is a surprisingly good film that perfectly captures the spirit of the ‘90s and delivers exciting, suspenseful action, making it a movie worth watching again.

What makes Dante’s Peak stand out is how believable it is. While Volcano focused on explosive action, Dante’s Peak built suspense through realistic volcanic dangers like ash, mudflows, poisonous gases, and acidic lakes. The movie quickly escalates from building tension to full-blown chaos, brought to life with surprisingly effective practical effects and CGI. Throughout all the disaster, the film focuses on the characters and how they work together to survive. Though it might not be the most famous disaster movie of the ’90s, Dante’s Peak is undeniably entertaining and successfully combines personal stories with large-scale action.

What’s New on Peacock?

On April 1st, Peacock added a bunch of new movies to its streaming library, including Dante’s Peak. Subscribers can now enjoy films like the hilarious Airplane!, Steve Carell’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and the beloved classic Dead Poets Society. Other recent additions include Crocodile Dundee, Interstellar, Pulp Fiction, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.
