Marvel Studios has signaled that Green Goblin will be appearing in more Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects, though there’s a twist. The character, famously played by Willem Dafoe, unexpectedly returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home from the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films, becoming a major villain. After that, Marvel Animation introduced another version of Norman Osborn in Season 1 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man as a helpful mentor to Peter Parker in a different universe.
The first season of the popular Disney+ show followed Norman’s journey as he became a mentor and support system for Peter, helping him improve his Spider-Man suit with new technology. While Norman Osborn hadn’t become the Green Goblin by the end of the season, the show hinted that this transformation might happen soon.
So, I was listening to the latest Escape Pod podcast, and Brad Winderbaum, who’s a big shot at Marvel Studios overseeing all their streaming, TV, and animation, basically confirmed what we’ve all been expecting: Norman Osborn from the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man show will eventually become the Green Goblin. He put it really well, saying we know it’s going to happen, but they want us to get to know these characters first before they make that transition. It’s good to hear they’re thinking about the storytelling!
What I love about ‘Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ is that it lets us really see how relationships develop over time, much like the comics do. We get to watch characters grow and change gradually. For example, Lonnie Lincoln doesn’t just become Tombstone overnight, and Norman Osborn isn’t instantly the Green Goblin. We all know Norman’s heading that way eventually – it’s inevitable! – but the show lets us spend time with him before he becomes the villain, really getting to know him as a person first. It’s about building those long-term arcs and letting things unfold naturally.
I was really glad to hear what Winderbaum said about Norman Osborn. It sounds like they’re not rushing his turn into the Green Goblin, and that’s perfect! It means the show can really focus on building that complex relationship between Norman and Peter, exploring all the emotional baggage and family dynamics. It’s a smart approach, mirroring how carefully they’re developing the friendship between Spider-Man and Tombstone – a slow burn that feels much more impactful.

The animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man initially presented Norman (voiced by Colman Domingo) as a helpful character. However, the current season suggests he’s starting down a path that will likely turn him into a villain, which would be very upsetting for Peter.
At New York Comic Con, Marvel’s Kevin Winderbaum hinted that Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will explore a much more intense and emotionally charged relationship between Peter Parker, Norman Osborn, and Harry Osborn, suggesting the characters will face higher stakes than before.
Season two continues the story immediately after the first season’s events. Our showrunner, Jeff Trammell, and I often discuss how characters’ abilities grow and how they’ll face increasingly difficult challenges as the series progresses. Basically, we’re focused on characters getting stronger over time.
The emotional core of ‘Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ really shines through, especially in the complex relationships between Norman Osborn, Peter Parker, and Harry Osborn. Their interactions are so intense and layered, it sometimes feels reminiscent of the show ‘Succession.’ It’s a deeply emotional, exciting story with incredible animation.
Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will continue the story right after the dramatic events of Season 1. Peter Parker will have left his internship at Oscorp, realizing Norman Osborn was manipulating him. But Norman isn’t finished yet – he’s managed to recover a piece of the symbiote from the Monolith incident, giving him a surprising new advantage.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 2 is set to release on Disney+ in Fall 2026.
Why Holding Off on Norman Osborn’s Green Goblin Reveal Is Brilliant

Revealing the Green Goblin fully in Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man would feel disappointing. This major villainous turn needs to develop naturally over time, not happen too quickly.
Brad Winderbaum is smart to pace the character’s transformation. By holding back on a complete change, he’s creating a more compelling and tragic villain, rather than simply copying the animated series. This approach keeps viewers engaged and ensures the villain, Norman, remains a significant character with depth, not just a fleeting threat.
Unlike many Spider-Man stories where Norman Osborn becomes a villain through a quick descent into madness or a single accident, this version takes a different approach. It explores how the slow, creeping effects of power, family history, and overwhelming ambition can corrupt a person.
When Norman Osborn becomes the Green Goblin, his fight with Peter Parker will be incredibly intense and emotionally damaging, permanently altering the story of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
