Sony today launched The Playerbase, a unique program that lets players like you participate in testing and providing feedback on some of their most popular games.
I get that the company is trying to strengthen its relationships with key people, but I’m not sure this is the most effective way to do it.
This is similar to the recent promotion they announced, offering players who get a Platinum Trophy the chance to buy special, limited-edition merchandise.
If you missed the news, the process is similar to applying for a reality TV show – you need to submit an application and then successfully complete an interview to be selected.
Initially, the winner will get a trip to Los Angeles where their face will be scanned for use in the Gran Turismo 7 game.
Just to clarify, you won’t be shown in the game as a player character. Instead, your image will be used as a portrait to help players navigate the menus – basically, we’ll use a professional photo of you. Plus, you’ll get to create a custom design for the vehicles!
The initial image hints at exciting possibilities – you might even get to play a character in a future Horizon or The Last of Us game, like a townsperson or even a zombie! That sounds pretty neat.
Sony’s description of this makes it seem like they’re offering a chance to be in a movie, but without any guarantee of payment.
In a PlayStation blog post, Isabelle Tomatis, VP of Global Marketing, explained this is intended to honor their gaming fans, though only one winner will be chosen.
To succeed, you’ll need to do video interviews so the company can get to know you and understand why you’re passionate about PlayStation.
I’m a bit skeptical, but I doubt those interviews matter when it comes to being featured in the game. If they’re including your picture, they probably want to make sure you present a good image, don’t they?
Honestly, knowing specific details like who directed Uncharted 2 or worked on Patapon isn’t important. It’s really about finding someone who presents themselves well, don’t you think?
There’s a legitimate privacy concern to consider. If you win and get a 3D scan, could Sony potentially use your image forever, or use it to develop new technologies like AI?
I don’t believe the company would do that, and I hope they don’t, but their competition rules are currently unclear, like most legal agreements.
The text refers to agreeing to the use of facial geometry data, which could be classified as biometric information depending on local laws.
It’s still unclear how long this data will be kept, or if it might be used in future games or with other technologies.
I can definitely see why people would support a project like this. I personally backed Shenmue 3 and spent a lot of money doing so, and I enjoyed seeing my name included in the game as a thank you.
That’s different – I genuinely wanted to support the game. This feels less like a celebration of fans and more like a disguised competition.
If Sony genuinely wants to show appreciation for its most dedicated fans, it could explore better options. A good first step would be to re-establish communication – the company hasn’t been very open with its audience for quite some time.
It might also revive programs like PS Stars, which rewarded players with actual money for their loyalty.
I’m trying not to be too negative about this – it could actually be great. It would be fantastic if the winners have something lasting to remember their victory by.
Honestly, I’m a little disappointed. While it’s nice they tried to acknowledge PlayStation fans, it feels pretty lackluster. I really think Sony is capable of putting together something much more special and celebratory for us.
