Over the past few weeks, HBO has been sharing more and more details about its upcoming Harry Potter TV series, including initial looks at key characters. The first trailer for the show, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, introduced us to actors like John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. We’ve also gotten sneak peeks through HBO Max’s behind-the-scenes documentary, Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic.
The recent Harry Potter documentary offered fresh insights and a behind-the-scenes look at the filmmaking process, highlighting the impressive special effects and animatronics – even showcasing creatures like flobberworms and fire crabs that didn’t make it into the films. The documentary also included interviews with cast members, and Reddit user u/tvvofaced noticed what appears to be the first glimpse of Luke Thallon in his role as Professor Quirinus Quirrell (as reported by Wizarding World Direct on X).

How The First Look At Professor Quirrell Avoids A Harry Potter Plot Hole

If this is truly Quirrell – and it strongly appears to be the actor who played him – it presents a fascinating shift in the films. He’s wearing the character’s costume, complete with the familiar purple tie, but noticeably absent is the turban. That turban, of course, hid the fact that Lord Voldemort was possessing him.
It’s fine that Quirrell wore the turban at Hogwarts, but the movies created a continuity error. Showing him with it during his first meeting with Harry at The Leaky Cauldron suggests he was already possessed by Voldemort then. However, Lily’s protective charm later prevented him from touching Harry, which means he shouldn’t have been able to shake Harry’s hand in that earlier scene either.
The movie differed from the book in one detail. Although the character is working for Voldemort during the scene at The Leaky Cauldron, the book doesn’t mention him wearing a turban. While it’s possible he was wearing it, his next appearance strongly implies he wasn’t. When Harry sees him again in the Great Hall at Hogwarts, he specifically notices Quirrell’s “large purple turban.” Furthermore, Quirrell later reveals that Voldemort didn’t fully possess him until after the events at the Cauldron, as he explains during their final confrontation.
He was furious when I couldn’t steal the Stone from Gringotts. As a result, he punished me and decided to monitor my actions more carefully.
If this is the Diagon Alley set, which fits with the documentary’s focus on it, then the TV show appears to be correcting a change made to the character of Quirrell, likely to avoid a plot inconsistency. The show is clearly aiming for greater faithfulness to the books than the films achieved, and this is another instance of them restoring details that were altered or omitted.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone releases Christmas 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
