The comic series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord revisits a particularly interesting character from the franchise. Initially appearing as a villain in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul has become a powerful and tragic figure through appearances in The Clone Wars and Rebels. Shadow Lord promises to explore his story in greater depth than ever before, and it’s not the only story with compelling characters.
I have to say, Brander Lawson is really grabbing my attention in Maul – Shadow Lord. He’s a police detective from the planet Janix – you might remember him from the comics, but this is his first time on screen! And Wagner Moura voices him – what perfect casting! It feels so timely, as it’s coming after everyone saw his amazing work in The Secret Agent. He’s easily the biggest name attached to the show, and he absolutely nails the role.
Wagner Moura’s Brander Lawson Ensures Shadow Lord Feels Different From Other Star Wars Shows
The core idea behind Shadow Lord is Maul’s attempt to rebuild his criminal empire, the Shadow Collective, and ultimately get revenge on Darth Sidious. While we’ve explored similar storylines with Maul before, the introduction of Devon Izara, a Twi’lek Jedi Padawan who could become his apprentice, and especially the character of Lawson, makes this feel like a new and exciting direction for the Star Wars universe.
This detective feels like he’s wandered straight out of a classic film noir and into the Star Wars universe. The tense pursuit between him and Darth Maul is the most exciting part of the early chapters of Shadow Lord, setting it apart from previous installments. The detective himself, Lawson, is a compelling character. We get glimpses into his complicated life – a former wife who now works for the Empire, a humorous dynamic with his idealistic partner, a mysterious past connection with an informant named Rheena-Sul, and a constant struggle between doing his job by the book and avoiding the involvement of the ISB, even when it means bending the rules.
I’m really enjoying Maul: Shadow Lord and eager to see how Lawson’s pursuit of Maul unfolds, especially as he navigates the added complication of avoiding Imperial involvement. The possibility of him working with Jedi Master Eeko-Dio-Daki is also exciting. It’s fitting that Moura, known for his portrayal of Pablo Escobar in Narcos, is playing a character who appears to be complex and well-developed.
Maul: Shadow Lord releases its next two episodes on Monday, April 13th on Disney+.
