Noah Hawley first gained widespread recognition for the FX series Fargo, a show that benefited from the strong following of the original Coen Brothers film. Many wondered if he’d stick too closely to the source material or stray too far, but he ultimately created a reimagining of the dark comedy, updating the story for a new audience. He’s proven his ability to creatively rework existing properties with each season, and last year’s Alien: Earth continued that trend – it wasn’t a simple reboot, but rather a fresh take incorporating elements from across the entire Alien universe.
Noah Hawley, known for his work on Fargo and Legion, is planning a remake of the 2017 horror film Terrified for the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s producing and directing, and he’s collaborating with the original director, Demián Rugna. Terrified is considered one of the most genuinely frightening movies of the last decade, but it hasn’t reached a wide audience in the US, primarily being available on the Shudder streaming service. Rugna recently followed up with another chilling film, When Evil Lurks.
The new film isn’t a direct remake of the Argentinian movie it’s based on; it’s more of a fresh take. Like Fargo and Alien: Earth, it centers around an investigation into strange occurrences in a quiet neighborhood. While many supernatural thrillers build suspense gradually, Terrified immediately plunges viewers into shocking and disturbing scenes, and the intensity only increases from there.

Although the story in Terrified moves the plot along, the film’s true strength lies in how it creates scares. Unlike slower, more atmospheric horror movies like Paranormal Activity or Undertone, which build tension by making you question what you see, Terrified is a constant onslaught of frights. Director Demián Rugna also unsettled audiences with When Evil Lurks, another supernatural story set in a small town. In both films, Rugna’s style feels similar to that of Sam Raimi, immediately throwing viewers into a terrifying experience.
It’s important to remember that Terrified is different from the Terrifier series, which is known for its extremely violent and gory scenes featuring the villain Art the Clown. While Art has become a popular horror icon, even appearing at events like Halloween Horror Nights and in Spirit Halloween stores, Terrified remains a lesser-known, cult favorite.
The movie also raises questions about the future of the Alien: Earth series. Production on Season 2 begins in May, and the creator, Noah Hawley, envisions the show lasting for several seasons. He might film Terrified later this year, after Alien: Earth finishes, or he could share directing responsibilities with the Alien: Earth team. Since Alien: Earth is being filmed in Bangkok, Terrified could also be shot there, taking place in another unusual international setting.
