ABC Officially Spoils Wagner’s High Potential Season 3 Fate After Fatal Cliffhanger

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of High Potential, episode 18, “Family Tree.” Despite a life-or-death situation for Nick Wagner, ABC has confirmed he will return for season 3. The American version of the French series HPI, starring Kaitlin Olson, recently finished its 2025-2026 season with a shocking final ten minutes. While the murder case involving a Los Angeles figure wasn’t as complex as last year’s mystery, the episode delivered significant developments for the characters.

The show “Family Tree” delivered some shocking moments, revealing updates on both Roman’s disappearance and Karadec’s love life, especially after Lucia became involved in the investigation. However, the biggest surprise came at the very end of the episode when Morgan discovered Wagner had been stabbed. The season one finale of “High Potential” demonstrated the show’s creators are skilled at leaving viewers on the edge of their seats, a technique they continued in season two. Sadly, recent news from ABC has revealed details about Wagner’s fate, spoiling the mystery for fans.

Wagner Is Confirmed To Be Leaving LAPD Major Crimes In High Potential Season 3

The season finale of High Potential left viewers heartbroken as Morgan frantically called for help while holding Wagner, who was unconscious. Paramedics arrived quickly, offering some hope for his survival, though he’d already been injured in the park for an unknown amount of time. Even if Wagner recovers, it’s confirmed that he will no longer be Captain of the LAPD Major Crimes unit when High Potential returns for its third season.

Shortly after finishing up his role on “Family Tree,” Steve Howey is leaving “High Potential” as a regular cast member. While the show’s writers haven’t decided if his character, Wagner, will survive a recent stabbing, he won’t be a main part of the show when it returns for its third season this fall.

If the actor who plays Wagner is still with the show, there’s a chance his character, Howey, could return. While Howey’s first appearance didn’t appeal to everyone, recent episodes have made him a popular character with viewers. That’s why his potential exit is particularly disappointing.

What Wagner Leaving Means For Morgan & High Potential’s Future

As a big fan of High Potential, everyone’s still rooting for Morgan and Karadec to end up together – it’s that classic slow-burn romance you often see on network TV, and honestly, the show seems built for it. But I have to admit, I really enjoyed the chemistry Morgan had with Wagner in season 2. It was a fun dynamic, even though we all expect her to eventually pair up with Karadec.

The show built the relationship between these characters so well that viewers were rooting for them to become a couple, even if just for a short time. If Wagner dies, Morgan will likely feel responsible. If Wagner lives but leaves the team, it will be a significant loss, particularly because of his contributions to the Roman investigation.

With Wagner gone, a key position is now open, giving Soto a chance to step up. This is a significant moment for her, especially since she was previously overlooked for a promotion many believed she deserved. Wagner’s exit in season 3 of High Potential also leaves the team vulnerable, as he was their main advocate with management, particularly with his father increasingly targeting Morgan and her team.
